Haven't the impartiality guidelines changed since Neil's time?
I didn't see Question Time but it's very hard to see any excuse for domestic violence no matter who is involved.

Well on top of that the previous chair of the BBC has been on the news saying that the impartiality rules only apply to news and current affairs presenters, which would also excuse Lineker.

I guess Lineker's high profile makes him a special case?
Maybe the BBC are looking for a reason to get him off the pay roll.

Surely the issue is that Lineker signed a contract with a company who don't allow it's employees to do what he did.
If getting his opinion known is so important to him there are several other broadcasters who would let him tweet to his hearts content.

No.

There are several issues, but that's not one of them.

Lineker is not an employee. He is a freelancer on a contract. None of us know what that contract says.

There is a difference of opinion on what the rules about impartiality mean. Greg Dyke says they only apply to the area of your own speciality. So news and current affairs presenters should not make public political comment in their private capacity as well as on air, to ensure the BBC not only is, but is seen to be, impartial. Dyke says those rules don't apply to others, including sports presenters. Which is bourne out by the behaviour of others in the past.

Taking Lineker off-air in this way creates the impression, rightly or wrongly, that the BBC is responding to government pressure. This it must never do, or we all are weakened.

It will be very interesting to see how this works out. I think the BBC staff, as a whole and not just the sports department, will be hopping mad.

Ask one question, and answer honestly, if Lineker had expressed an opinion, similar to J K Rowling, about trans gender or LBQT, what would be the opinion of the people who today are supporting him, hypocrites

Over 9000 license fees go directly into Gary Lineker's pocket. The fact that the BBC's highest paid person is apparently exempt from it's own rules is ridiculous.

What he actually said was that the government are pursuing an:-

"immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s".

That's not comparing us to the Third Reich.

He thinks the policy is cruel and goes on to describe the language being used. The rhetoric and xenophobic terminology. Not about the people or their politics. Just the language.

They are fair points, which are worth discussion, despite what you and Braverman think, or whether anyone else agrees or not.

It's an opinion. In a free country we thrive on opinions.

You hardly ever post in politics, and now here you are all worked up and armed with your opinion polls.

I have often suspected that the Labour Party or other Left wing organisations have sleepers who sign up to various sites and try to shut down or influence opinion on high profile matters when instructed.

Maybe I just have a vivid imagination.

Never mind all the free speech stuff.

Only a total moron thinks that you can just allow ever increasing illegal immigration, which is already over loading the system, and do nothing about it.
It is foolish ideological claptrap, and it would be remiss of the BBC and government if they allowed dim wits like Lineker to promote that stupidity.

What is wrong with what Lineker said, we're trying to ship illegal immigrants to a country which is run by a government who orchestrated the worst genocide in the 21st century. Over 1 million butchered for being born into a minority tribe.

"illegal immigration" (no refugees are illegal under international law) is actually down compared to how it was 20 years ago

Do you think there should be controls of any sort of immigration?
