I used to work on many Sainsbury's developments across the country. They are fully conversant with being held to ransom over a slither of land needed to complete their own land assembly for stores.

They will simply see this as payback for the times when they paid through the nose during their expansion heyday. They will be in no rush.

Even if discussions had taken place with Sainsbury's before the announcement (if they didnt) I dont think it would make any difference.

Sainsbury's could have played it in two ways

- Agree to everything, knowing that when it came down to detailed negotiations they could change their mind and hold us to ransom.

- Say they support plans, but object to anything that supports them.

Essentially it's still Nimbyism but with a massive estates division.

Agreed. Unless there is a carrot or the possibility of a stick they have the upper hand.

If the council made it clear a compulsory purchase order was in the offing they might do the maths and decide that better to settle now than spend money on lawyers fees in a case they would probably lose.

The unanswered question is how seriously are we pursing this and what type of deal have we offered them.

Good information (above). ^^
Although Sainsbury's is significantly more massive than any football club, and well able to put up an unwinnable fight. What would benefit CPFC during negotiations, is to gain sight of Selhurst Sainbury's recent financial performance figures.

If Sainsbury's are reviewing store performances, then the financial performance of their Selhurst branch will be a closely-guarded secret.

My own personal guess, is that Selhurst Sainsbury's is not a great performer in the larger scale of Sainsbury's. The quibbling over a piece of land, at this stage, might just be pivotal in deciding the future of the store.

**I am no expert and have no insider information. I just see this issue as being a mahoosive game of bluff.

Whenever I’ve been in there it’s quiet. I don’t know how they look at keeping a low performing store open to prevent Tesco growing market share with their Thornton Heath store being the nearest other big supermarket.

Very likely not that seriously. If we were serious we’d be making progress. It ain’t happening with the current owners. I’ve got used to it.

Why would there be a CPO in favour of a private enterprise?

Only carrots and thus cost.

If Croydon council deem the improvement to be beneficial to the area and they feel Sainsbury are behaving unreasonably! But you are correct we would have to get the council on board.

Largers supermarkets are generally struggling across the country as shopping trends have changed.
