Which bit? One club of 20 has signed a striker. Perhaps he was more readily available than the 4/5 targets we are haggling over? The question is: would we have wanted Llorente? I genuinely don't know. Also, trust me - I am not happy going in to the 1st game with only one fit striker. My specs are not wholly rose-tinted. We could have hit e.g. the French market at the beginning of the window and bought one good striker. Not one to get your pulse racing; maybe 7/8 goals a season. However - and this appears to be the most important of all considerations for many posters on this thread - he would have joined the club for a full pre-season and been match fit from day one. Or... we hold out for the marquee signing long promised and that we all crave. As well as the £££, there would be the additional cost of a late start, the risk of putting all our eggs in poor Connor Wickham (!) and perhaps a few points dropped. The question is: which option do you prefer? Unless you are really lucky, getting someone from another league who is not in their national side and who has no PL experience is precarious. I prefer to hold out and risk taking the early hit. Man City have spent c.£100M on players. They can get the big names from day one because they have those readies to burn. We do not. We have to make choices and play a different game. My view is that we do no not have much in the way of bargaining strength. The club do not lack the ambition - just the pulling power. Given that, I agree with the majority of intelligent journalists who think we have had a very good window so far. PS just to indicate the misinformation that informs some of the odd posts on this site, the £100M US investment has been ring-fenced for the essential infrastructure spending. It is not available for players. My fault for a poorly quoted reply. Your post was in reply to someone saying the difference between us and the rest was we only had one fit striker. I was saying actually we're not alone in that position. And we are not even the worst off. I am frustrated by the lack of a striker, but think it is entirely understandable. I think most clubs are reluctant to let their current strike force go, especially to domestic opposition, as it weakens them when there appears to be little movement in the market to be able to get replacements in. It is difficult to know how to judge the board at the moment. If they really wanted Benteke and there genuinely was a £25m offer in place that was rejected (none of which has been confirmed by either club) then it will be a little frustrating if we miss out on him for the *reported* £5m extra that would secure him. But we have no real knowledge of what is going on in the background. The transfer window to date has - by any measure - been one of the best in our history. 3 players, 2 of whom are full internationals and one of whom may well be soon. All of whom strengthen our squad and are potential first team players. And at least 2 of which are in positions that were identified as serious deficiencies last season.

The biggest mistake was selling Gayle without a replacement. That was stupid. But, the utter rubbish people are spouting now is cringeworthy. Do the club want strikers? Yes. Have they put bids in for strikers? Yes. Did one reject us and go to Chelsea? Yes. Are all other clubs struggling to get strikers through the door? Yes. Will we get a striker or two before the window shuts? Yes. The key is patience. It's a sellers market at the minute. Not sure we'll get a Benteke but we will, I'm sure get someone who'll be better than what we have now. Great post. Agree entirely.

I'm not claiming to be 'ITK' or any of that bollocks however have been told good news to come before Saturday. This is Palace though so wouldn't be surprised if it goes pear-shaped. Edited by SeagullHunter (08 Aug 2016 3.02pm)
