Like Hammond you mean Indeed. He was in the middle of the extremely stupid political melee in the run up to an even more stupid referendum. A referendum which delivered the mess that we are now immersed in. Political claims and counter claims to encourage an ill informed electorate to vote the way you want them to, over such a vital issue as our membership of the EU, is throwing the future of our children and grandchildren into the laps of the gods. It's no way to run a country when we have already employed our MPs to represent us, and they are in place ready to look dispassionately at what is in our best interests.

ill informed. Very insulting. Not in the least. No-one, on either side of the debate, was well enough informed at the time. Compared to now when we all have had 3 years of constant debate we knew very little and nothing whatsoever about the possibility of leaving without first agreeing a new relationship.

Are we better informed now then?

The real scandal was Mrs May allowing her own cabinet members to vote against the government they belonged to. I have never seen that in my lifetime on a major policy. They have either resigned or been sacked it just shows how weak and ineffectual Mrs May was. Boris is only doing what Thatcher or Blair would have done. This is a three line whip you are either with us or against us and if the government falls so be it. I hope Boris sticks to that and if we do have a GE let's make polling date before 31st Oct.

I suspect, and I do so based on nothing I can articulate beyond my crust whirling away, that there is a huge twist in this all about to unfold. Yes, all the conventional wisdom is that Boris will effectively collapse his own Government and the truth is I cannot see anything to dispute that but I also suspect something else. So far Team Boris have managed to think a few moves ahead of the rest and I have a hunch the same is going to happen this week. Interesting times.

One scenario I can see playing out is that Corbyn and co do not call a no confidence motion but instead go for legislation blocking a no deal. They win that vote and Boris then kicks out the rebels but as Corbyn hasn't called a no confidence motion Boris is still saddled with the blocking a no deal law. In that circumstance I can see Boris wanting a GE but to do that he will have to call for a vote of no confidence in his own government. At that point Corbyn and co will have no choice but to vote against a motion of no confidence against the government brought by the government. If Corbyn doesn't vote then I think the Remain voters are entitled to say why not. Many twists and turns to come.

There is a convention that if the speaker is seeking to continue in his role then the major parties do not field a candidate in his constituency at the GE. This is a cosy little deal which suits everybody except the voters of course. They have a choice of voting for John Bercow or the Monster Raving Loony party or the Save our Local A&E candidate. The good people of Malden have lived in a one party state since 2009. To make matters worse even if you support the Speaker he does not vote for or against legislation except in an extreme situation so the electorate are effectively disenfranchised. There are rumours that the Tories are plotting revenge against Bercow and may field a candidate if he decides to stand again. They should as should Labour and the Lib Dems. It's time to change this cozy little arrangement.

Are we better informed now then? Had you, or anyone else, heard of a "backstop" to solve the Irish border question in 2016? Had you, or anyone else, even heard of a "no deal" Brexit let alone considered it's implications? It's far from all guesswork! One side floats on the wishes and hopes of restoring an era long since past. The other bases it's analysis on hard facts and realistic forecasts of the future development of world trade.
