It's not strictly true that Britain and France delclared war in order to liberate Poland. Poland was more a 'line in the sand', an ultimatum to Hitler that further aggression in Europe wouldn't be tolerated. I don't think it was ever the intention to send troops there as neither Britain or France were in a position to do so, even if they'd wanted to.
