4-2-3-1 consistently would be great. RB is probably the weakest link a transfer in January like Djed Spence, Max Aarons would really give us a more attacking threat. Hopefully Riedewald gets more minutes him and Doucoure could be a good partnership. And that will allow Wilf at his best on LW, Eze best position at CAM and Olise best position as a RW. And either Mateta or Edouard up front.

I'm sorry but presumably the people calling for Luka have watched him play? Another holding midfielder, yes, Luka no. That simple really. Shame, but he can't run and can't pass, plus gives away frees in silly areas, which we're not that good at defending. If anything bring on Hughes (also not great), or bring on Phillips.

This with knobs on - Luka is a sad relic of Royball and has no technical ability other than to needlessly concede fouls. A truly holding midfielder is desperately needed but hard to find. In the meantime give Hughes a go in place of Schlupp.

You are quiet correct, 77 minutes of Zaha yesterday, produced 2 shots, 0 on target, I worthwhile pass and zero tackles on an opponent hadly a potential match winner!

Swap him for Harvey Barnes. Wilf could be a truly great player but for his attitude.

You’re so far off the mark it’s laughable. Luka is technically very good. He’s got the quality on the ball - it’s the physical demands he struggles with nowadays. Gets caught out for pace etc.

He played very well when he came on against Leicester.

respect the away-point.

What mindless logic. I could equally say if we'd been winning for 85 minutes and then conceded, we would all be gutted.

He did seem a decent passer in the past, plus our set piece taker. However, seems to have regressed somehow. Personally, think he's never been the same since he started falling out with his national team. I also believe there was an injury. He was one of our better players, maybe our best player for a while. Not that good now, unfortunately. Not the worst player by any means, but behind others in the pecking order. A shame when it's the captain too.

Having watched the MoTD analysis I don't think that is the worst suggestion in the world and in fact may be a worthwhile consideration.

I still maintain Doucoure is very much a 'central midfielder', Eze/Olise attacking midfield players and Schlupp none of these things.

On MoTD they showed how at some points all three of our midfielders were too far forward and Leicester, with often a single pass, were able to have the free run of the park having gone past our entire midfield who were too far up the pitch

Edited by Nicholas91 (16 Oct 2022 12.10pm)

Or another way of looking at it our defence sat too deep on these occasions and not squeezing the midfield space.

However in saying that CD certainly needs support in the middle of the park as neither Wilf, Eze nor Olise seem capable of tackling and when Ayew is below par we just get overrun in midfield

Vieira's post match comments were illustrative.
He was unhappy with our play in the final third, our failure to pass the ball forward and our failure not to push players forward.
Is it a case that the players are not good enough or capable of following his instructions?
Or should he show more tactical flexibility to suit the talents of the available players?
We don't e.g have a Gallagher to press high or break in to the box.
He also said the substitution of Mitchell was not due to injury and that Jairo's forward passing offered another option.
He also hinted that Jairo didn't have tactical discipline which is perhaps why more isn't seen of him.

The way Vierira has been talking all week I wonder if it had an influence on the way the team played. He was saying Leicester are a very good team with excellent players and in a false position in the league with an excellent manager in Brendan Rogers. He said he has been telling the players all week not to underestimate their team as they are so much better than the table shows.
With all these comments I just wonder if our players were playing with these comments playing on their minds which held them back from being more proactive.
On the other hand they may have just had an off day which we all have from time to time.COYP

Every Premier League point is hard earned and the idea that we should be just turning up and beating the likes of Leicester and Leeds is fanciful.

I think, overall, the squad isn’t that good, lacking intensity / physicality and Gallagher’s loan papered over some of the cracks a bit.

Some of the chat about formations, RIedewald, Hughes etc smacks of the similar clutching at straws during the last year or so of Roy’s tenure IMO.

I really dislike the phrase “winnable games” but would imagine that’s exactly what many teams feel when see us on the fixture list.

Riedewald is a good player with the ball but has previous for losing his man and was frozen out after Liverpool away last season.

Do you seriously expect a club with our resources to have anything better than "average" players? Does it not occur to you that the better-than-average players migrate to the wealthier clubs via higher transfer fees and wages?

How come teams like Brentford and Brighton seem able to obtain players with better skill levels than ours and are able to sell them on for vast profits.Apart from AWB,who else have we been able to make a profit on recently? The scouting system in this club, I.e Freedman is vastly overrated.

100 % agree with this. Gallagher flying the nest has had a big affect on how we drive forward on the pitch ( he also scored goals) As for the winnable games im sure every team in the league thinks they can beat us.

The MOD pundits described us as 'poor'.

And the midfield was dissected unmercifully, 5 players taken out by a pass.

So how did we shut out Maddison & Co.?

Our defending especially Guita did not give much away, although they really should have scored a couple.

Zero goals conceded away from home not to be sneezed at, a very forgettable odd game.
