There are better democracies than ours and this proud boast of being the "Mother of all Parliaments", as well as being historically inaccurate, rings a little hollow. There are also much worse ones.

With FPTP we have a quasi-democracy which has, as its mandate, only about 40% of the electorate, most if them old and self - serving, and is effectively a 2-party state without sufficient checks and balances. There are better democracies than ours and this proud boast of being the "Mother of all Parliaments", as well as being historically inaccurate, rings a little hollow. There are also much worse ones. PR allows extremists to get to the centres of power - Hitler was elected under PR. My post was in answer to the communist, Steeleye, saying that we had 'very limited democracy'. I'm more than happy that people like him get little representation as so few people share and vote for his anti-British, extremist views. Edited by georgenorman (20 Feb 2022 12.30pm)

'Economic sanctions' against Russia? Does that include returning to them the alleged dirty money that has in fact gone into tory party coffers? The tories have turned London into the money-laundering capital of the world, no wonder Russian and others come here to hide from scrutiny. And what's a bung to the tories, a casual 2 millions here and there. They are so brazen, they even include it in their accounts. Well well, a late update. Russian oligarchs 'have nowhere to hide'? They can carry on hiding, in their posh kensington and Chelsea palaces, as the tories legislation will not apply to their properties! And the tory election coffers will no doubt continue to swell with their donations.

Interesting to read from Luka how NATO bombed his village indiscriminately. Avoid all wars the innocent always suffer. If only.

The Guardian thinks that Putin may be tried for war crimes. Sometimes I think Adrian Mole is writing for them.

We agree on quite a lot but you really are drifting off piste on this one. Our constitution in unwritten. It morphs to reflect changes and is enforced through the courts. Nothing wrong with that. Get a written constitution and they are written in stone. You are in 2nd amendment territory where ownership of a gun that made sense in the 1700s is used by bonkers rednecks to justify owning automatic assault rifles that should only be used by highly trained military personnel in combat zones. UK does not have a constitution. It includes everything that is not Legislated for. That is why recent Government Legislation proposals (restricting rights to protest) have so incensed Human Rights campaigners.

LOL. Croatian TV ran a spoof of the Ukranian refugee crisis with shots of what looked like super-models, all dollied up to the 9's, climbing down out of a private jet.

Modern main stream news-print journalism is now primarily composed of people under the age of 25 earning, at best, minimum wage and just as likely to be doing it whilst on an internship which pays nothing. In fact, they may have even paid (or rather a rich relative) to be doing them job. Along with numerous of the 'filler' types stories coming straight from PR/Ad agencies. Yes, the main opinion piece writers will still be the more mature and experienced journalists but thats about it. Still plenty of good writing/reporting out there but the chances of finding it in any daily newspaper, with notable exceptions and almost always in the weekend editions, are remote.
