the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. I can't imagine that Vieira would have played exactly like Roy had he had the same squad because they weren't capable of anything better. You only have to look at Ward and Luka to see that they are capable of more than what Roy got out of them (or didn't get out of them).

Which players did Roy actually improve? Yes he worked on shape and solidity and working hard without the ball, but that's not necessarily improving the individual. I get the impression that Vieira is looking at the individuals and challenging them to do things that haven't been asked of them before.

Their whole football philosophy is different. As some have said - it's comparing apples with pears or oranges or whatever, which is valid to a point. But my main question is whether Roy's philosophy is fit for purpose, and I don't think it is any more.

Anyway, what a great comeback yesterday!

I couldn't resist responding to this, especially in light of the way Andros has started at Everton.

Here's a quote from Andros from the end of last season '' He’s made me into a better player, and he’s made me into a better man. So I owe a lot to Roy Hodgson. ''

As for Roy's philosophy still being fit for purpose, I suspect we will never know as it's unlikely that he will work again at this level. But it certainly achieved stability even though being an increasingly hard watch.

The Manager, team, squad I see as still very much Work In Progress.

But certainly heading in the right direction.

It was good to see the crowd yesterday sticking with the team at 0-2 down and giving encouragement to the players as it was hard to take given the way that the play had gone.

This League is unforgiving - 3 individual errors in 2 games have been fully punished. You can't legislate for such events but it tells you a lot about the character of the players involved and the team as a whole, when they come back as they did
.

Good to see Olise have the impact that he did. PV is managing his minutes prudently I think. His time will definitely come so it would be good to see the usual bores on here laying off of Ayew.

I'm sure there will be some more bumps in the road in the coming months, but so far this is an enjoyable journey.

I think everyone can finally see the team moving in a positive direction.

Individual errors are frustrating, with a young team and manager it's going to happen. With time they get the game experience to cut them out. I'm sure they all know what they should be doing, but executing those decisions is another thing entirely.

7 points from 7 considering the option is a decent start all things considered. New manager, new players, and having played 5 teams you'd expect top half finished plus 2 lower half teams (Brighton and Brentford) in blistering form. Olise now returned and Eze waiting in the wings.

Good Times are ahead.

Maybe we could try Ayew as an out and out striker now? So we would have a voice of 3. As opposed to playing him on the wing.

I would, or at least in the no 9 role. Almost like the role that Shluppy was asked to play when he came on.

I'd rather bring Ayew on centrally in place of a midfielder, then swap Edouard for Benteke.

When it’s considered that in most cases the performances in the last two home games would have have produced six points, there is every reason to be really optimistic about the way things are going.
The fixture list has not been kind, yet we have come close to grabbing hold of it and tearing it up , not quiet however. But if you take Brentford ,out of it ,as there wasn’t a fixture last season, we are two points up on the corresponding fixtures .
We lost the two games ,we have lost, and we drew the rest.
We already look decent, if we can keep everyone fit we could be on the verge of being a very good side. I have never felt more optimistic about that.

So what are you saying, that Townsend is performing so well at Everton because of Roy, despite him hinting at the opposite of that since joining?

Don't you notice how everyone has only positive, lovely things to say about Roy when he's their boss (funny that), yet now he's gone, both Townsend and Zaha have shared their frustration with Roy's regime, and how they're much they're now enjoying their football? And the on-pitch evidence points towards them being far better attacking players than we've watched over the previous years.

I'll agree that in the public domain, footballers and pundits shower Roy with niceties, seemingly all down to him being a very old and generally nice chap. Yes the irony is that the likes of Lineker and Shearer couldn't find a good word to say about what he was paid a handsome sum to do (his job) - the football he had his team playing last season.

Of course, I know we won't agree. But I can see those comments from the likes of Townsend for what they are.

I gave Eduoard my man of match. His little runs around the box, deft flicks and the way he beat defenders with apparent ease was great to watch. I agree he should have scored, probably hit it too well but the way he made the initial space deserves credit. I honestly believe he will become a cult hero at Palace.
Sorry but can’t agree with you on Wilf, he did give the ball away a few times but why not berate teammates for not passing? Isn’t that passion that some on here say he does not have? I think he is becoming a different character on the field, no arguing with the ref, no going down to easily.
For the first time in a while I am excited by what is happening at Palace. Perhaps it doesn’t come across like that on TV

I thought just the same spider. The TV never sees the whole scene and certainly doesn’t capture all the atmosphere. But much better than nothing.

You are.

On a serious note, what did Wilf do today to keep his spot?
Moaned at about six of our players who didn't pass him the ball. I remember one little 10m run he did that was decent. Otherwise, can't recall a thing.

But he does occupy their defence. Always doubled up sometimes more which creates space elsewhere.

No, I'm not saying that at all - merely responding ( light heartedly ) to your comment as it reminded me of the Andros quote - that's it. All credit to Andros and Benetez for what's happening at Everton.

Good for you that you have an insight into what these comments '' for what they are ''. That doesn't stack up to my own experience when talking to a couple of his former players that I know and that have no reason to say anything other than exactly what they think of him - Including that they found the training incredibly dull !

While I supported Roy over the seasons he was with us, I don't think anyone could make a case for the football being attractive.

without going too far down the rabbit hole on this, as I know the pros and cons of Roy have been debated to death, but that's the bit I find really weird. On one hand it's all "he's a wonderful man, a legend of our time", whereas the day-to-day reality is that the training for players and experience for fans is incredibly dull an uninspiring - the opposite of what it's supposed to be, yet he still takes the plaudits.

I need to get my head out of this senseless mental loop and do some work.

What happened yesterday - why did we play against Holmesdale in the first half?

think you find it was more todo with conditions. wind was a big factor some teams like to attack with the wind 1st half some would sooner defend, team i played for wanted wind behind second half as we held the ball better than most teams

OK I was one of the few who was very reserved about the appointment of PV. I think in fairness to myself I said I was cynical and he would have to prove himself as a manager. I have to give him credit where it is due and that he is doing what we had hoped and at a quicker pace than I expected. Fingers crossed it continues.

I think credit also has to go to Dougie and the scouting team. Much maligned over the years, don't forget that it will have been these guys doing the donkey work behind the scenes. All the indications are that all our summer signings are having a positive impact. A very enviable situation for any club. I was sceptical how well our backline could play a passing game out the back. yes we have made some mistakes in this area, which sadly has cost us, but that is probably the most challenging area for PV to create a change in philosophy.

Finally, with regards to Wilf, it is interesting to see how he is becoming less influential than he was. We have wanted to stop being a `one man team` and this is exactly what we are getting. Wilf has been and will be less effective than he was due to our change in style of play. The backline plays higher up the pitch restricting the space Wilf can find to take men on in a one to one situation. With a counterattacking style he would be fed a more direct ball to run onto and have greater space to force a backtracking opponent into. Many of us have believed that in the past he would not be as effective for a top tier team as he was for us due to this reason. With us slowing the play down a bit in a more condensed final third he is playing more passes etc in order to break a defence down rather than running on them. If he can adapt to this new style remains to e seen but he is still one of our main threats.
