Beginning to smell a rat with this narrative. Far too easy a scapegoat for this entire debacle. Where is the video footage of the battles? Where are the journalists embedded in with the army units? If the Afghan army just folded up, then we would be swamped with videos of Taliban triumphs, especially in this age of phone footage. I might be completely wrong on this but from I can make out, the Afghan Army were not even deployed on the ground. More than willing to be corrected and schooled on this supposed complete and utter implosion of the Afghan Army but so far, almost zero evidence of it. Sorry I'd missed this reply. I agree that the pace of this is difficult to get a grasp on. Either it's not quite as portrayed, or the imposed government was such a bad fit and pay cheque by pay cheque that it fell apart the moment they US left. It may just have been a bad fit for a culture that's existed for hundreds of years. The cynical part of me does however wonder if this is some kind of set up for further military action in the middle east in a year or so.

I only hope they're missing because they're fleeing. They're probably missing because their dad's and husbands and brothers ran away from the taliban.

HOC yesterday was a virtue signallers convention. Labour complaining that the UK should have done more to build an anti Taliban alliance amongst the west ignoring the fact that the government did try to do that and got a firm no from the EU et al (not that I blame them). Lisa Nandy complaining about UK withdrawing troops when a few months ago she went on record saying it was time for the UK to leave. Starmer was using his full "Captain Hindsight" superpowers to tell HOC how he'd seen this coming of course he and the rest of the opposition hadn't bothered to mention Afghanistan until the last few weeks. As for the Tories according to the media Mrs May never made a single speech about Afghanistan whilst PM until yesterday when she was full of concern. I am not excusing the government the evacuation has been a shambles and Raab should not have been on holiday, however the US withdrawing was a unilateral decision and NATO and the EU were not interested in stepping up so what exactly was the UK supposed to do. Half the Labour Party spend their time going on Stop The War marches now all of a sudden they want troops in. The level of hypocrisy from all sides of the house and lack of viable alternate plans yesterday was shameful. You might as well as said "something most be done" that's the level of intelligent debate we get these days. "Sir, sir Boris minor is not paying attention". Edited by Badger11 (19 Aug 2021 8.04am)

As I said no solutions just bluster. Obviously our military were dealt a cr%p hand being sent there in the first place but keeping going this long our even further would only bring us more death and misery. also how would we pay for all this Covid has emptied our coffers

Sure I get for those MPs who served in Afghanistan it was a betrayal but leaving aside the emotion the UK staying on our own was never a viable option. We don't have the troops or the money. IDS saying we should take the lead fine problem is that it will be a coalition of one, the rest of Europe are keeping their heads down.

Biden: No way to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan 'without chaos ensuing'. What an amazing comment. A Chamberlain figure, they even look alike. Does he even tie his own shoe-laces?

And when Afghanistan starts slipping from the radar, we are then reminded of what a complete shower of 5hlt we have in the HoC who are imbuing the UK population with their infinite wisdom of how to run a country. Media will turn their attention to "didn't we do well at the Olympics" and who was voted off Strictly CD. It seems perplexing that a CPFC football forum has come up with practical 'unpoliticised' suggestions that would undoubtedly give a far better outcome than the complete farce that is still many years from unfolding completely.

It's not going to 'slip' from the radar as China has already and continues to push its economic and political interests in the country, primarily for raw materials such as heavy metals, estimated value to be between $2-3 trillion. In addition, it's a key area for China's 'Belt & Road' project. They've been working with the Taliban for years already, waiting for the right opportunity to push ahead, the time for which seems to have arrived. Edited by Orange1290 (19 Aug 2021 12.10pm)

Blimey 20 pages on this topic, but still no musings from the Sage of St Ives? Kinda guessing that Biden hasn't lived up to his lofty expectations. Just a guess mind!!
