I was pleased by the fact that we now have tried 3 different formations. One of the biggest criticisms of the last 2-3 years has been a complete lack of plan b. The changes in tactics look like the manager is pragmatic, and tactically astute.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Harsh. Thy looked as good as their recent results imply and were clearly down to have a real go.

We weren't great but we looked much more settled in possession - even when being pressed/closed down an dthe passing looked better too. If & when we speed it up we look fairly decent. At times, especially when Townsend was on the pitch, the transition from defence to attack was very good & the score would probably have been more if we had a powerful striker on the pitch.

Switched off a bit right at the end which led to three defenders not taking responsibility & clearing an easy ball over the top.

Odd points of note:

Kelly looked half decent
Ward seems better at LCB than RWB
Jules can make a CF look plain stupid
Dann looks more like the old version (pre-captaincy)
FdB is able to change it up
The weird 'experiment' playing right footed players on the left & vice versa actually worked out ok. Maybe not ideal but it showed players can fill in or rotate positions without too much grief.

There's a lot of work to do but signs of improvement are clear.

Close
It actually starts with a 'Jason Puncheo' and ends with an 'n'

Nephews fist game at palace. He is only 6 and a half so it was getting late so his other uncle took him home on 80 minutes. He missed most of the exciting bits.

He'll end up a Sunderland fan: mark my words

Has the penny dropped? De Boer changed to a 4-3-3 and we scored and won.....

I don't think it's that simple, but I am pleased he is willing to try new formations and ideas. It give the lie to people who've been arguing he is stuck on 3-4-3.

Yeah to be fair he went 3-4-3 purist against Huddersfield and we got spanked. He then adjusted it for Liverpool and we didn't play great but played far better. He's now adjusted it again and we've won. Fingers crossed for Saturday!

Never understood those who bang on about him being stuck on 3-4-3. He's said enough times his preferred system is 4-3-3 but that didn't seem to suit our squad. It's likely transfer targets will be players that suit more than one system if the three he's got so far are anything to go by.

Tonight looked like he was trying to see if he could get both working with the players he had (including the fringe ones).

Back from the game :- 1st was absolutely dire, boring and dull. Lucky in the second half we changed formation and looked better. Jimmy mac back to his best, Lokilo looked good also. Puncheon was terrible again. Would love to see a midfield of mcarthur, Cabaye and lofus cheek against Swansea. Great strikes from mcarthur and fair play to Ipswich fans sung their hearts out.

Agree the Ipswich fans really supported their team . Good job the "fanatics " turned up otherwise we would have been well outsung
. Just under 10,000 attended bet the missing thousands will be fighting for tickets for the final when we get there.
