The semi-sentient mans Keane.

I'm too old to be aware of or care about how these sort of bands are viewed by the yout.(people under 50) They have done the occasional good tune, that's all I care about.Like I say, my tastes are very eclectic.

The only think that makes me laugh is when people like bands who are god awful to listen to just because they are deemed to be cool or political or when they hate bands just because they are not considered "cool".

It's a bit schoolboy really.

I had to look that up.

No doubt you are familiar with them because you and your friends have picketed some of their gigs.

I did go to a Manowar gig once where a load of skin heads turned up for a while.
It made a very amusing sight to see them in their floppy braces and 18 hole DM's seig heiling toward the band who were sporting long hair, loin cloths, leather and studs. They are a sort of sword and sorcery metal band if you don't know.
Apparently the skin heads had attended because the band did a song called "Hail To England". They left after that one.

Sums up the mentality really.

Well its not about whether you like them, its about whether they have quality beyond that appreciation. I quite like Megan Traynors 'All about that Bass' but I know its actually a bit s**t, but I like it. Same with Bwitched's first album - Its very s**t but I love it. There is nothing wrong with liking something that's actually not very good.

The issue here is where people 'worshipping bands you think are s**t'. I'd say Travis are alright - and that's the point, most stuff is alright. I like Sonic Youth, but f**k me they're actually more pretentious than some of their fans (But then if you also recorded Kool Thing you've probably earned the right to).

Man of War - Classic - I remember seeing them with their 'Time for some heavy metal bending', and they bent a metal bar. You don't get entertainment like that outside of metal.

Like Dio, wonderfully bad but good, but bad stuff.

My wife was explaining to me why she loved 'Chop Suey' by System of a Down. I must admit to having no idea what it was about other than some brutal riffs with a man shouting too fast to understand over the top.

I'm very much a lyrics kind of man.

I remember seeing the Canadian Metal singer/strong man/actor "Thor" do stuff like that. Blowing up a hot water bottle, bending a bar etc. Don't remember Manowar doing that stuff.

The issue here is how define what is "good". What a musician might think is good might well differ from what a non musician will say is good. The standard of the musician will have an impact of how he perceives the quality of other musicians. There have been a lot of very over rated musicians in the pop/rock world.
Lyric writing is clearly a subjective taste. One could discuss the quality of lyrics as one would discuss poetry or books generally, but often it is about identifying.
Sometimes the key element of a song is a melodic chord sequence and nothing more.
I have always liked "pop" music because it is often the art of the studio producer and engineers to manufacture something memorable and wonderful from the musicians in question. Most new pop stuff has lost a lot of that skill since most of it consists of off the shelf sampling. It has made pop music more homogeneous than ever before.

True. I went to see The North Mississippi Allstars at the Garage years ago. Loads of big names in the crowd, Noel Gallagher, Richard Ashcroft for example.
I bet not many people have heard of The North Mississippi Allstars.
