HMHS - It doesn't, its just a personal opinion as a law abiding citizen. Bexter - He committed the crime with older members of his family. If one of them had been shot I very much doubt it would have been a problem.

if someone was robbing your home though, thoughts running through your mind would be that they are armed, and really dont give a bollocks about your life... obviously, or they wouldnt be robbing you blind

No possessions are worth a life - mine or theirs. Would you want that on your conscience for the rest of your days? This is a very emotive subject to the good people of Norfolk for obvious reasons. The poor man never was the full ticket, you might even say mentally ill and let down by the system. He lived a lonely, barren life in the middle of nowhere with only a few dogs for company, no living family, no friends, no close neighbours and a house that was falling rapidly into disrepair left to him when his parents passed away. Unable to cope too well with everyday life, Tony Martin struggled to cope with running the tiny farm his father had striven to earn a meagre living from. As if his life wasn't tough enough, scumbags from the midlands started making regular trips to his area of Norfolk to rob the people there as they slept in their beds. Tony Martin was robbed while he slept, five times within the space of seven months. He is said to have been terrified and distraught that they might one day return, find nothing left to steal and kill him in his own bed, as I said, this is a man with mental problems. He is frightened and alone and on the edge. That fateful night, he awoke to hear the intruders entering the house yet again, terrified he ventured down the stairs with a loaded gun and fired into the darkness, the rest is history! Whether the scumbag kid deserved to die or not, is not the point here, the point is; does Tony Martin really deserve to go to prison for a lengthy term, or does he deserve help from a system that has let him down badly? I would have thought people like Bexter would sympathise with the mentally ill and their plight, I was obviously wrong.

Unless you are put in this situation, I think it's almost impossible to say how you might react. Personally I think I might have acted in a similar manor. Picture the scene. I see an intruder in my house with his back to me. If I owned a gun I probably would have picked it up. I have a 2 year old daughter asleep upstairs. I need to think extremly quickly. If I don't react he could turn on me with a weapon. If I do react I can assure the safety of my baby, my own flesh and blood, and not the scallywag thats entered my house for who knows what reason.

Well I think the little runt got what was coming to him. I remember reading that the property was regularly under seige from local tearaways (no doubt the same ones each time) and that Mr Martin had removed part of the staircase in an attempt to stop people breaking in. It didn't, so he shot them. stick that in your 'karma, I won't harm them, they won't harm me' Daily Mail reading, do good pipe and smoke it!

eagle eye, i don't agree with the needless death of anyone whatever age, hence my anti iraqi war stance. i have been burgled, arrived home to find the two men in my house and i can hand on heart say that if i had had some means of killing them i would not have, i couldn't wake up and realise i had killed someone because of a fecking video recorder. damn, i would have liked to box them around the ears and damn if i had caught up with the fellow who mugged my mum in italy i would have done just that such was my rage but death? when it wasn't even self defence? nah. if he is trully mentally ill then that should have been considered at his trial, and i mean trully ill, not just someone with the same gun ho attitude as some on here. you can't belittle the killing of someone, it's one of the lowest things a human can do to a fellow human.

Sorry but i dont care who you are you will take up arms to defend yourself and what ever is yours...........the system sucks when its those who are defending themselves actually get nicked for it and if the lad had survived you can guarantee that all he would have recieved law wise is a smacked wrist........

It was bloody considered at his trial, do you even read the papers? It was considered but ignored, the court decided to make an example of him because of the high profile of the case. How do you stand on the woman that murders her long-term abusive husband in his sleep? Should she serve the full term or would you consider the term ‘Diminished responsibility’?

a woman who has been physically abused for a period of time? see, now you're talking physical, self defence, not robbery. Edited by Bexter (16 Jan 2003 6:04pm)
