The Beatles. Nobody else comes close in terms of popularity, influence AND critical acclaim. People will still know their songs in a hundred years time, which can't be said of many other bands. I'm personally not an enormous fan of them, but as CiderEagle has pointed out, in terms of influence, there is no band that has or will come close to them. They spawned an entire culture and no other band has done anything to compare to that.
