I f***ing hate pikeys aswell,We had to throw them out my pub once becuase they all kicked off The pikey kids are the worst though, they need a good hard slap! They are the reason why most South Norwood pubs dont allow children in! Such a shame how the pikeys ruin it for everyone else

I can't believe what I'm reading. I'm sure all your experiences were terrible, but does that justify tarring an entire community with the same brush? Substitute the word "blacks" or "asians" for "pikeys" in this thread and you would all be rightly accused of spouting blatant racism. Aren't we supposed to be - quite rightly - kicking racism out of football? Judging all gypsies by the behaviour of their worst is like saying all football fans are hoolies because of Millwall. You come across "pikeys" all the time without knowing - because most of them just get on with their lives and don't cause bother. The only ones you notice are the ones creating trouble. Let's have a bit of perspective eh lads? Edited by Seth (09 Jun 2004 10:30pm)

Pikeys and Gypsies are two very different things. No gypsy would want to be associated with pikeys.
That's just the ramblings of a madman |

The thing is Seth I know loads of black or asian people who are very fine people and wouldn't tar them all with the same brush. But I have never ever heard someone say "There was a load of Pikeys in the Tesco car park. But they were no bother - didn't leave a scrap of rubbish and were very well behaved" These are the ones we're all on about. I believe the true 'Romany' gypsies are true travelling people not this filthy band of travellers who leave rubbish everywhere they go......... and steal horses (probably).

A lot of the people you meet with Irish accents are "pikeys" - most of them going about their business on the margins of society causing no bother to no-one.

I knew I'd get the "PC" tag chucked at me! It's very easy isn't it - just shout "PC" and hope all reasonable arguments melt away. Yes, I come from the "left" of the political spectrum - if that still means anything. You can call me PC if you like - I can take it, it's meaningless anyway. I stand by my comments. And I notice none of those who were spewing racism here earlier have returned to defend their ill informed remarks. Edited by Seth (10 Jun 2004 2:17pm)

It's terrible - my sister is becoming more and more of a pikey, and she doesn't believe me! Her friends are some of the most pikey people I've ever met, and if I had my way, I'd make sure my sister never had them round our house coz I don't trust them one bit. Sadly, my mum disagrees and says 'but they're her friends'. I hate pikeys.

I think the thing is Seth, Pikey isn't really that well classified. If you have a go at all Asians and all Blacks then you are clearly racist and I don't believe anyone I've met from these boards is. Pikeys is a term bandied around and it's almost like "Chav". Not everyone in the world with a Burberry cap is a Chav Scum but there are "certain types" with all their bling etc who you wouldn't want to associate with (Apart from Mr Michael who's a good egg). I'm sure there are lots of good people who live in caravans and are ok people - in which case most people on here wouldn't brand them Pikey. I don't find the phrase offensive, the same way as I don't find Chav offensive. I believe the tag is applied once we see what sort of traveller they are. If they're ok then they're just "that bloke who lives in a van". If they leave a stack of rubbish and nick the lead of your roof then they're a Pikey. Where's Bexter when you need her? I think you and her would get on well Seth (that's not a dig. It's good to have people who can stick up for their opinion in the face of a lot of opposition) She's much better at these sensible posts than I am.
