mostly just going through the motions to be fair , should play these games behind closed doors rather than ripping off fans , If you are not going to give 100% then dont bother

Poor. Very Poor.

But seen plenty of bad build up games to tournaments before.

Wharton is 10 x the CM of Mainoo who is undoubtably a great AM prospect - but we have loads of those

Um, yeah, erm onward and upward...

Plan B needed Wharton & Hendo to link it all together.

Still, 4 Palace in the squad, looking forward to seeing them all in the finals.

One shot on target. Reminds me of Palace back in the day.

EE got the ball twice IIRC in his 20 mins or so. He looks England's best attacker by far.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

Well that was sh*te! Meanwhile Scotland threw away a 2 goal lead against Finland. Ah well, on the bright side they scored a couple and didn’t lose. I’m sure J-P Mac Teta must have a Scottish granny somewhere.

Mainoo seems to be the latest media darling. I thought he was pony tonight, but then again most of them were.

Half time analysis

Mainoo too far forward for the Iceland goal to have any chance of helping protect the defence against the counter attack

Southgate will be worried how open we were

Guehi was one of the better performances

Im really not sure Southgate knows what is going on. No system no plan. Just constantly trying out players.
We are so lucky to have got Glasner. He is exceptional especially after Roy.

I think his plan is to always have two disciplined central midfielders

But everyone hates that, as it means exciting forwards miss out

So he tried to follow the zeitgeist that as long as everyone is really talented attacking just pick a lot of attacking minded players and it will work out

It could. But it didn't.

Iceland really did us a favour by showing how easy it is to thwart that obvious strategy

Out of 26 players he has only picked one, and that was an out there kind of left field pick, that has a centre midfield discipline to the midfield art of passing, and defending but most critically of positional sense and their role within a team.

Basically he has boxed himself into a corner with his football beliefs and the squad that he has picked that he has only one solution. Which is Adam Wharton.

I fear he will go for Conor Gallagher instead. Who has other admirable qualities. But not ones that will work on this international stage to give any structure to England's play. Or Trent Alexander-Arnold who really has no natural gifts in the centre.

Basically Adam allows everyone else to look really good and do good things.

We’ve had a superb squad in recent tournaments that would have won them if Southgate hadn’t been the manager. The same problems have been shown in the last couple of matches where the build up is just too slow and allows the opposition to defend in numbers easily and have the odd breakaway to punish us as happened tonight. Bellingham coming in will help but sadly with Southgate as manager we will screw this competition up as well as with the past winnable ones. Our midfield is just to cautious and our passing not direct enough :-(

We'll see. Southgate brought Alexander-Arnold on as a right back where he played OK, like he did when Wharton replaced him in that position against B & H and where he proved more effective than he had in midfield.
From this game, Mainoo played himself out of a starting role and although Gallagher performed well at the end of the season it was alongside the more defensively-minded Caicedo. Rice also looks to get forward on the ball but with Mainoo ahead of him Iceland (pop 377,689) were looking more likely team to score at the end of the game

Wharton may prove too inexperienced but with a shaky defence, I think the only way England have a hope of winning is if he is a starter
