Chelsea wanted him and Blackburn wanted to accept their offer Wharton insisted on Palace so he would get to play in the PL and not just loaned back to Blackburn or sit in the reserves - smart lad Edited by mileend (25 Apr 2024 10.21pm)

I think teams are looking for something other than goals and assists in defensive midfielders. Wharton is getting a lot pf praise from independent observers.

Im really hoping we can keep our stars for at least one more season. Many of us have paid for years on a reasonably priced season ticket to see some pretty boring football.

I know its a big rise in a matter of weeks, but the boy is unbelievably talented. £60m isnt what he's worth now, but future value. Hard to remember he's 20, has just been catapulted into a struggling prem team and has put in great performances every week. He's proved he can make the step up. In the next 3 years I have zero doubts he'll be at a Champions League club.

What's impressive is the net value of today's squad compared with the bargain prices paid for some of them eg Eze, Olise, Guehi, Munoz, Wharton. There's no doubting Dougie's shrewd ability to acquire talented players putting us into a very strong financial negotiating position. Hope he resists the approach from Newcastle.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

These are my estimates for what we might realistically get for our players, were they to transfer to another club this summer. name value They are estimated market values, amounts I believe clubs would actually pay. I'm sure some are inflated, others too low. I am not super aware of contract status. They do not reflect my personal view of individuals' value to the team in any way. They are only best guess market prices. Olise, for example, must be worth more but it seems he has a release clause. Hughes is in great form. Edouard is better (I personally feel) than the value I assigned him. Regardless, we have amassed a great and valuable squad and with some clever trading can afford to lose one or two stars this summer. And we have some like Ozoh and JRS and unseen youth boys who maybe need adding. If rumours are to be believed, Liverpool opened discussion on Doucoure at £85M. I don't believe, of course, and who knows what will come back after a season injured, but... £14M for a pivotal player has to be on the cheap side.

The report says they are also happy at Palace so even if a clause is partially activated they will need to agree other terms to persuade them to leave. It probably reflects reality, we might need to sell this summer for the finances, but at least puts the discussion at a sensible level One of the most annoying aspects of the yearly Zaha will he stay, will he go saga was that the big clubs would unsettle by putting in ridiculously low bids. The Arsenal one where they claimed to be too poor to offer any higher was ridiculous / hilarious - especially as they then blew £70m on Pepe Now the wanna be suitors know that there is going to be no easy pickings My view is that £60m is not enough for either of them - Wan Bissaka was £50m - but obviously I am biased!
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

We've got some of the richest owners in English football outside the Middle East.
