After a recent visit to Vienna's "House of music", where a large part of the exhibition deals with Mozart, I can confirm that the often mentioned fact that Mozart died in poverty is not quite correct. The funeral 3rd class which is often cited as proof for his poverty was the usual way to bury ALL people at this time. He had an average annual salary of around 150K € (indexed) which usually guaranteed a good life in Vienna at this time. As his demands were even more he had some debts but still was eligible for credit when he died.
