Zero chance the club would accept that today. He's become so good.

Unless we can unearth a couple of strikers who are going to score a hatful of goals for us ( or at least reach double figures) I would hang on to JP. In spite of my doubts, and the doubts of many others, he has turned into a very decent player.

Mateta has improved massively and become a good player for us. But he's not worth anywhere near £35m. He's on a good run but 7 goals and four assists all season is hardly world beating.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

He is worth at least £35m to us, as we have nothing else. Most improved player at the club, we don’t have a great record of finding strikers, basically due to the cost of proven goalscorers , we always go for potential, which doesn’t always work out.

He is a good player for us atm, I'm very happy with his improvement, recent performances and identity within this team.

I think 'for us' is the key wording however. I can't see somebody else thinking 'he's exactly what we need' and thus forking out a large sum for him. Just my opinion and for the time being, I hope he continues to be a 'good player for us'... if he does, there really won't be nobody better than Jean Phillipe Mateta, at Palace anyway

Edit: Just as an aside, and assuming I've remembered correctly, but were the audio guys so pessimistic that they took the day off on Saturday? I can't recall the Vengaboys or even GAO ringing out after JPM's opener???

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

If we had an academy wunderkind coming through the ranks then we could do that. But we don't (do we?) and this is the only option we have to stay within financial rules.

We wont have to worry about fairplay after the next window, if Olise and one of the CDs is sold, about about 80m profit off the two deals.

But those 7 goals have come since he came on for the injured Edouard against Liverpool which led to his first proper starting run in the team since his arrival at the club. Prior to the Liverpool game, he was usually a late sub for Edouard. So, his 7 goals have come in a run of 16 league games which is a decent return for a striker in a team like ours. We can also note that he has scored 4 in 6 since Glasner took over and is looking more and more confident with each game.

He is probably going to be POTY for us, which I'm pretty sure no one saw coming at the start of the season. Whether his improvement is due to game time or work on the training pitch he is now a real handful. He's a real character so you can't help but want him to do well, especially as he actually looks like he's enjoying himself; there's no cool posturing or posing and when he scores he looks like it means something. I agree that he's probably found his level with us, but that's fine with me. He still looks knackered after two minutes but there is a lot of him to carry around!

Many correspondents don’t seem to realise that JP was a two goal a game forward in both France and Germany before his transfer to Palace. We were lucky to get him as Mainz were desperate for money. Roy treated him with the same distain as he treated Sorloth, even after the Leicester goal which started the good run after Vieira and the hatrick against Plymouth. I always thought that selling him on would be a mistake as some other team would benefit at our expense. Everton were sniffing around during the summer window.
Our record with strikers is only poor because the wingers are poor at crossing the ball and rather selfish when it came to passing to others in better scoring positions. Zaha and Ayew provided only 3-4 assists each per season in the last five years. We saw an example of this on Saturday when in a 3 to 1 situation Ayew shot when a simple pass would guarantee us the lead again. No wonder OG was filmed taking the foetal position with his head in his hands!
