Good news. By offering a new contract now it's a statement of faith in him by the club. I think players find that important which sends a good vibe to players at other clubs. I know we all think of footballers as greedy mercenaries but I do think that a club that has a reputation of looking after them is one of those intangibles that might just tip the balance. Don't forget we were all shocked when Olise signed a new contract I was convinced he was going but fair play to the club. We can't compete with the big six on money but we can look after our players, this is not just about Doucoure but the next potential signing.

With Glasner's (3-4-2-1) formation he will definitely start probably with Lerma and that means Wharton will be benched unless Wharton outperforms Lerma for the rest of the season. Really hope the Injury layoff doesn't effect him, and he manages to get back to his previous high level, never a foregone conclusion, I agree with A previous poster, it could be early 2025 that we could have to wait til. Assuming he does and it all goes swimmingly, very excited to see him return into this team. He was POTY for us in a midfield that gave him no support. Now, with Lerma and/or Wharton around him, it could release his true ablity and take some of the pressure off him.

I think when he is fit it will be Wharton and Doucoure, Probably the best combined DMs in the Premier league.
“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn |

You need to have an understanding of how football finances work. He has been given an extension to his contract to keep his value high. The value fluctuation between having one year left ( possibly run his contract down) and a 5 year contract is huge. Additionally he is a bloody good player for us and seemingly happy to stay. FFS what a pathetic response. I've worked in finance for the last 30 years so can assure you i know more about it than you. We signed him on a 5 year contract so he has over 3 years left. His value will only start reducing when there is less than 2 years left. He has a major injury so may never recapture the same form. Of course he's happy to sign a longer , improved contract. The risk is all ours Arsenal just paid over £100m for Rice who had 1 year left of his contract (with the club having the option of 1 more).

Why is it moaning. Would you give a pay rise to a member of staff that wasn’t going to work for 12 months also in the knowledge they might never be as good as they were before? It’s a risk for sure and it’s clearly not gone well in the case of another of our long term injured in Ferguson. I can understand why they have done it however I would hope there is a get out clause in the new contract if he doesn’t return to full fitness, after all it’s not just a few pounds being thrown around. thank you Eagle, saved me the hassle.

I would be amazed if he is out for 12 months , maybe 10 years ago that was the case , but medicine and surgery have moved on , Eze who had a similar injury was out for 6 months and I remember a guy at the world cup last year who ruptured his Achilles and returned within 4 months , I would expect him ready for pre season
