If we're going to play with three CBs going forward, then we'll need 5/6 in the squad.

Anderson - Guehi - Richards first choice

Tomkins - Holding - Ward in reserve.

Given that you'd expect a couple of them to leave in the summer, reckon we'll be in for more in the transfer window. Lloyd Kelly on a free would be Ideal. Pity we let O'Brien go so cheap.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

Ward has done superbly and also provided some overlaps.

But if we want a core back three and wingbacks, then Richards edges out Ward. He's a great guy to have though for all the reasons given. I also think he'll find distribution easier in that position.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

It'll be nice if nothing more than a mini-renaissance for him for the rest of the season.

He knows he's on his way out, as is common for a 34 year old in the Premier League but after being such a good servant, unceremoneously dropping him and saying "no more game time unless Munoz and Clyne get injured" isn't the best way to treat him (though fine and necessary if we were sticking with a back 4).

I like that now, fans don't have to get on his back and groan because he won't run forward, won't cross the ball and isn't fast enough to get back.

He could well enjoy a few months of being lauded for winning aerial duels, hard tackling and then laying it off to Andersen or Munoz to do the forward passing.

I just feel like this is a perfect way to end his career where he is often under-rated and blamed for things that are out of his control whereas he should really be looked at in a similar light to Speroni or Jedinak.

Good post.
One of my all time favourite players for Palace and he can still do a decent job for the team.

That's why he must get picked, for his defensive nouse in the 6 yard box. It's the only part of his game I like. He's like having another goalie. I like this set up as it now we have a bigger squad, with the likes of Tomkins and Holding to bolster the back 3. It takes pressure off the wingers having to be defenders as well all the time and getting themselves hamstrung every second flipping match (HODGSON!!! GRRRR!!!). This makes better sense (going off topic sorry), but now Wardy actually has a reason to be on the pitch. Yes I think he'll be okay in the centre.

Ward lacked the attacking instinct and pace you might desire from a RB and may well need in the modern game. He's also probably not quite the presence you need from a CB. I've longed for a new RB for quite some time but as things would have it, I think the 'RCB' role is perfect for Joel, regardless of his age, and the flying wing back looks to be the perfect fit for Munoz.

All fit, I'd suggest a combination of Guehi, Andersen, Ward and Richards with Tomkins and Holding if absolutely necessary looks quite promising at the back. Munoz is perfect for the RWB (and Clyne can probably do a job there) and whilst the jury is out on Mitchell, all round it inspires a lot more faith from me.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

We do still have Killian Phillips who is on loan up at Aberdeen under the 'watchful' eye of Colin

There was a Ward diving header a few years ago which proved to be the winner v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
A real collector’s item.

I agree, although not as collectable as the match ball that he actually scored the diving header with. I have that very ball and hope one day I can get Joel to sign it.

Ward was such a stellar signing by us back when we were struggling.....We made so many brilliant signings, Delaney, Jedinak, Phillips.

It's a remarkable story, rags to riches...quite incredible really.

You are right and the people behind it were Freedman and Parish; the same two who come in for so much criticism. Thank goodness they ignore all the "noise" and just get on with the job. They will be incredibly hard to replace at some time down the road.

The right CB position certainly plays more to his strengths than a modern full back.

And given our defensive fragilities, someone who will put their body on the line, and be a bit vocal has been really useful.

However, he's not a great passer and is on his last legs. I'd 100% give him another years contract, but also looking to be bringing in a younger model. Ronnie Edwards would get my vote.

Yes - but how is this relevant to our CB situation? Phillips is a midfielder and one who has tended to play in an advanced role in his outings in League 1 and the Scottish Prem (although since Warnock has gone there he's hardly had any minutes at Aberdeen).
