If we are to play a 3 with wing backs then based on current playing staff, I think Mitchell gets dropped and you play:

Johnstone
Andersen, Richards, Guehi
Munoz, Doucoure, Wharton, Ayew
Olise, Eze
Mateta

Ayew is already pretty tenacious in the tackle. It wouldn’t take much to convert him to a wing back.

A standard 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 and Mitchell comes back into the team.

If we are indeed going to playing with wing backs then I would suggest Mitchell's days are numbered. He is absolutely useless going forward, devoid of any confidence when attacking.
The chance in the 1st half last night when he found himself through on Pickford was a prime example. You could literally see from his body language how uncomfortable he was with the opportunity.

Well, at least he got up there for the opportunity. Let's see if coaching him to play a more advanced position improves his confidence

a bit harsh - if he was that uncomfortable going forward surely he wouldn't have been in that position in the first place.

I do like the suggestion of Ayew at LWB - good call. Maybe Mitchell could tuck in and be the left side of a 3 with Andersen in the middle and MG on the right of the 3

I agree with this, no offence to KBLF's post, Mitchell has had any attacking intent he had coached out of him, he used to link up with Zaha quite a bit & can(could) put a good cross in. Lets see how he gets on with the new regime.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Reading the posts regarding OG preferred system, I think he has seen enough to know what will and won’t work. Especially this season. Don’t know much about him much like most on here but I doubt he is a fool and wouldn’t have taken the job if he didn’t think he could protect our premier league status first and foremost. All being well we will see more of a shift in the summer.

Regarding Mitchell, I think he is underestimated and thought a lot more highly by others than most palace fans. I myself don’t see too much of a problem with him, he certainly isn’t the worst left back I’ve seen and he is young enough and seems to have the legs to adapt to wing back. He always seems to be up there to back up first Wilf and lately Ayew.

Whoever suggested Ayew as wing back, I think that is a good shout too. For this season with no further transfer windows I can see those working better than JS or Eze when he comes back.

To be fair praising him for getting up there as a wing back is a bit like praising a delivery driver for being in the van and on his way to the job... Its what he's paid to do but the most important part hasn't happened yet.

I actually thought defensively he was the best he's been for a while last night. He's really not been good enough for this level the last couple of seasons. In fact teams have on occasions actually targeted our left hand side as he is clearly seen as a weak link.

Unfortunately I don't think any amount of coaching to his forward play will make much difference as he clearly has no natural ability going forward. I'd love to be proved wrong though.

I disagree. He has put in some decent crosses and smart passes to Edouard and Mateta this season (inc the dunmmy one Eze scored from I believe)

According to my data, where up to 2 assists are allowed for a goal, only Mateta and Ayew better him this year. He's also scored once. I can see both stats improving under Glasner

Blimey are we allowing two assists per goal now?? I call that clutching at straws but I guess that's the modern game..

We will have to wait and see won't we? As I said I really hope he does improve greatly under Glasner because let's face it he needs to. Having Munoz on one wing and Mitchell on the other going on their current ability at getting forward will make things extremely disjointed as it currently stands.

First, let's acknowledge that only 5 players in the Premier League have made more tackles than Tyrick Mitchell. Second, let's acknowledge that Roy hasn't asked him to go forward – in his entire career, really – but he has had some success when he's ventured there.

I personally think he'll thrive as a wingback, defending well at midfield and gaining confidence going forward. He's only 24, entering the prime of his career.
