I always thought we saw the Ramsdale/Raya situation at Arsenal and thought "that seems like a really good idea".

Henderson isn't physically imposing. Not does he exclude an air of calm in the same way as Johnstone was. I didn't understand the rationale behind signing such an expensive 'keeper last summer and I still don't now. Nor me especially when we had Butland

The explanation I have seen for Henderson's signing last summer is that Guiata's bust up with the club meant that Johnstone was our only goalkeeper with any Premier League experience. Apparently he has a £10 million release clause in his contract and we were worried that Manchester Utd would buy Pickford from Everton to try and solve their goalkeeping problem and Everton would then trigger the release clause in Johnstone's contract. So we decided it was better to have two goalkeepers with PL experience than none and purchased Henderson while he was available.

As I stated, it was the uncertainty over the future of Johnstone which triggered the purchase of Henderson. To my mind Johnstone is the more accomplished goalkeeper and with the onset of the 'Euros', sitting on the sidelines will damage his prospects of selection. Edited by Willo (22 Jan 2024 12.19pm)

I see Kelleher's available from Liverpool for around £20m. We should get in quick as it would give us another option to defend a 3-0 defeat.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

I agree with your assessment. I think it is very likely Johnstone will start against Sheffield United (unless it's another case of Roy's stubbornness).

It's a strange one and was at the time. Henderson seems like your mate's younger brother who steps in to play for your Sunday Team, full of arrogance and swagger but lacking the physicality needed for the age group. Johnstone seems far sturdier in goal albeit your straight cut, toe the line, consummate professional. Totally.
