My sentiments entirely and I have used similar terminology myself. I certainly do NOT view myself as some 71 year old pre-historic relic and thankfully, thus far I am not slothful in my stance nor creak like a Tudor door's hinges.I have a full head of hair, do not wear dentures and my spectacles are only required for reading. At times I have felt like a 'Reliant Robin' smoking down the slow lane of life but this is often replaced with vim and vigour !

We shouldn't forget the past but neither should we dwell in it. I know too many people who refuse to change or grow. I do not want to be that person. At the age of 56 I gave up alcohol and took up yoga it opened up a new way of life for me and I would say I am a better person for it. Many of my friends are now dead largely due to their lifestyle choices and their refusal to at least moderate their behaviour. By the way you quote about Life has...dwell in. In yoga we have a saying "We come into this world on a single breath and leave it the same way, what we do between those two breathes is what counts". Namaste (I salute your practice).
I think the past can be a playground for the mind. Nostalgia and remembrance of all things departed can be healthy.

Should be grateful for getting old as many haven't been so fortunate.

Make sure you have plenty of influence from much younger people. Keep moving on, you are in a good position to judge what of the new to adopt and what to ignore. 50 is definitely the beginning of the body not being able to respond so well when you declare you are finally going to get fitter.

I think one of the most important things I learnt from useful people in life was to have a daily routine of beneficial activities that you keep to. It pays you back richly in life. There's are books about it here's a link. [Link] Don't drink, smoke, don't do drugs as they all age you quickly. Focus on helping your family.

I had a friend who argued that at a certain age in your life it shouldn't matter anymore e.g. if you are 90 and frail why shouldn't you smoke and drink or take drugs if it makes you happy. Unfortunately he drank himself to death in his early fifties leaving a wife and 2 young daughters without a father. So I would argue he was a selfish b****** he put his needs before his family. I do take his point though. My neighbour is 92 and blind and doesn't get about much occasionally she tells me she feels guilty because she has scoffed a couple of cream cakes.

As the saying goes - give up smoking and drinking. You won't live any longer but it'll feel like it.
