I'd keep Hughes and Schlupp and perhaps Matthews. Bring in a speedy right back.

It's January 1st which means I am hungover but also that our players with expiring contracts could technically sign pre-contract agreements with clubs abroad. Here is our list of players with expiring contracts along with their reported current weekly wages (according to spotrac.com)...

Will Hughes (£35,000)
Jeffrey Schlupp (£50,000)
Jairo Riedewald (£55,000)
Nathaniel Clyne (£80,000)
Joel Ward (£35,000)
Nathan Ferguson (£25,000)
James Tomkins (£50,000)
Remi Matthews (£5,385)

So, who would you keep and get rid of?

For me Will Hughes, Jeffrey Schlupp (on reduced terms) and Joel Ward should stay. All as squad players. We should then bring in a new first choice right back. Surely we can't continue paying Clyne 80k, Riedewald, 55k and Tomkins 50k at this point. Ferguson is patently never going to recover so, brutal as it might be, he needs to go too.

Retain ;

Hughes, Schlupp, Clyne

Release ;

The rest

Like I said, only my opinion..

I agree. We need some fresh wood and the likes to Jairo and Tomkins are on big money and never play.

For me the 2 big disappointments this season have been Hughes and Schlupp. Both on big wages (Hughes is on over £50k a week, not £35k, as he turned down a new contract from Watford to move to us, as he wanted £60k. Can't see him moving to us for the same money) and have looked off the pace this season.

Unless there are both prepared to accept big wage reductions i would let them go.

I think one of Ward and Clyne are still need though (we say the same every year). As Clyne is younger i'd go with him. He is not on £80k BTW. I think i've seen £29k quoted elsewhere.

Agreed.
Unfortunately Parish's business model thus far is to keep duffers well beyond their sell by date, therefore limiting opportunity for others and not raising any revenue from sales.
This naturally also comes down to the quality of the scouting network.
The question to ask to sort the wheat from the chaff is, "Who out of the players listed above is going to make a meaningful contribution next season?"

In an ideal world we'd not renew any of these 8 contracts. Unfortunately, this isn't an ideal world. We already have a small squad. Take those 8 players out of our squad and we are left with a squad of just 16 1st team players plus 2 from the Academy (Franca and Ozoh - Rak-Sakyi becomes one of the 25 next season having turned 21 in October and hence one of the 16). That leaves 9 spaces available if we want to fill them and that assumes we don't lose anyone in the Summer.

Against that background:
1. I don't see us buying anything like 9 players to give us a full squad.

2. I don't see anyone in the Academy (other than Franca and Ozoh) as being ready to be brought into the 1st team squad.

3. Of the players out on loan none in League 1 or 2 are making a case for PL 1st team football. Phillips is the nearest but it's unclear whether or not he's improved on his decent spell at L1 Shrewsbury last season. The only possible candidate for 1st squad consideration IMO is Malachi Boateng who has been a regular starter at Dundee in the Scottish Premiership which I would guestimate equates to Lower English Championship level at best.

Consequently, I suspect retaining some of the 8 will be a necessity. Who to retain. Well assuming we can renew contracts at a lower wage level given these palyers will at best be squad players, I would go for:
- Schlupp
- Hughes
- Clyne
but I can well see the Board offering contracts to Riedewald and Matthews as well.

Why, they are expensive rubbish, Schlupp maybe for versatility,

Why not Jaydon Bogle, Ben Johnson and Caio Vinicius, all free, all cheaper, all better, dont forget all the out of contract players would want a signing on fee

One of the players on the list maybe let go for non footballing reasons. I wont say who because it is just internet gossip, but if true the club will ditch him quicker than Usain Bolt.

One more point

Is this a player who, err, has been in the media before

Eh?

I'm not asking you to name names, but for an ignoramus like me, give another clue!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Will Hughes (£35,000) - - Wouldn't cry but not keen to offload either.
Jeffrey Schlupp (£50,000) - I'd keep.
Jairo Riedewald (£55,000) - Been here long enough with barely any impact. Like him on a personal level but for financial/footballing reasons would be pleased to see him go.
Nathaniel Clyne (£80,000) - Paid far too much, would happily keep at much lower price but would rather a new, suitable RB altogether.
Joel Ward (£35,000) - Great guy, perhaps legendary status, but past it for some time now. Needs to go.
Nathan Ferguson (£25,000) - Who?
James Tomkins (£50,000) - Well past it, can go. Underrated in terms of value to us though, think he has been/was a great signing. Felt as though we had WHU over there.
Remi Matthews (£5,385) - At that price, I'd keep him for now.
