Even poor players have the odd good game. If he continues to do well then it'll be a bonus - but I wouldn't bank on it.

Now eduard is injured he may actually believe he can make it his role. When he knows he’s back on the bench every other time no matter what it can’t be very inspiring.

Yesterday, Mateta did everything that you want from him. He harried defenders and chased the ball down. Held the ball up and linked play. Scored. Great stuff. The question I was left with was why hasn't he be doing this before ? Lots of good points here.
I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry. |

He is a very rangy individual, think Peter Crouch,he is not Crouches standard but has that Daddy Long legs in a hurry and determined to fall over his own feet, defenders don't know what he is doing and neither does he.As we have no other option let's hope he takes his chance. This injury crisis might have a silver lining and throw up a few gems.

Whatever we are feeding Mateta, we need to keep it up. He looked slimmer, fitter, faster and more skilful than Ive ever seen him. Just hope that Foden atrocity foul didn't damage him. Modern day shin pads clearly work.

Ha ! I knew I'd get that response ! Ok, ask yourself if he's produced that kind of performance when he has started. Because I must have missed it.
20/21 2 starts; a poor performance in a loss at Leeds and THAT goal at the Amex 21/22 13 starts with 5 goals and 1 assist. Longest starting run was 4 22/23 6 starts 0 goals or assists longest starting run was 3. 23/24 4 starts 1 goal longest starting run is 3. Basically he hasn't been given a run in the team.

I think for good reason. He's rarely displayed any quality when he has played - selections should be earned and I don't think he's been doing enough to make the manager want to give him a run in the team. Yesterday may have been a turning point. That was a performance that can't be ignored. Needs to do it regularly now...

Roy has clearly never fancied him. He barely played him after he was signed and then since he's returned he's only been getting cameos once Eduoard is tired out from walking too much. It's possible he's a player who does better when they start as they need time to find their way into a game. Other players are better coming on and making an impact. It doesn't help that Mateta looks like he's knackered every time he runs ten feet. His first touch and hold up play were massively improved on Saturday compared to most games this season where the ball has just bounced off him. It's almost certain he'll start on Thursday so he'll get another chance to prove he should be starting. I like him as a personality so I really hope he does continue this form. Edit: This popped up as a memory on my socials. Who remembers this satire that did the rounds back when? Mateta can probably relate! "Dear Jonas, Edited by taylors lovechild (18 Dec 2023 9.00am)

IMO our issue is that we have 2 strikers that are pretty decent finishers, but don't always contribute a huge amount else. OE is better technically, but JMP is a bit more 'chaos'. Whilst JMP frustrates the hell out of me, I'd personally start him over OE. He always shoots early vs OE often getting dispossessed whilst winding up. Not sure on OE's injury, but hope JMP gets a bit of a run now

Without going too overboard, I think Mateta's performance on Saturday was the best I've seen from a Palace line leading forward for some years now.

Play him against a team like us who defend compact and in numbers and then you may see the Mateta we know and don't like that much.
