I do recall, perhaps in the 80s, being told that there was a rather portly referee with a Lambeg Drum paunch assigned to a Sunday League game on a park pitch. Conscious that he might attract vitriol due to his large girth, he visited the teams in the dressing-rooms and told them "Don't you dare call me a fat c..t" which drew raucous laughter from the players.

Great story, Willo. That's really made me laugh.

To adapt the old saying about ducks, if it looks like harassment and sounds like harassment, then it's harassment. And if a policy of sin-binning for harassment is strictly applied, it'll work; if not, it won't.

(And the grotesque pictures of Haaland in today's papers are hardly going to help opponents of such a measure.)

you would often wonder about identity politics & referees.

Israel vs any Muslim team.......who to referee ?

Glasgow Rangers vs Glasgow Celtic.....surely Alaister McAlaister or Paddy Murphy would be a poor choice ?

an Argentine ref for any England game. Or an Israeli Ref when Germany are playing ?

we can be certain that Refs in England are passionate about the game. Hence, what team to THEY support ? and is there a record of this at the FA ? Would you be happy about a Brighton fan being a referee for any of our games ?

The red highlight, when i was active as a ref, yes there was, The FA knew i supported Palace & i was never allowed to ref any Palace game no matter what age group nor even away, also i wasn't allowed to ref Brighton.

In the Turkish Super league last night I see a ref got punched by one of the teams club president after his team conceded a 97th minute equalizer.

Whilst shocking in itself, quite frankly with the amount of money & jeopardy involved in the game at the highest level its not really surprising that peoples reactions are going to become more and more extreme, it clearly all got too much for this guy & he let his emotions get the better of him.

And apparently several others put the boot in whilst he was on the ground

Here's something to warm you up on a winters' day.

'The Battle of Santiago'.

Chile v Italy 1962, refereed admirably by our own Ken Aston who lived to tell the tale.

Complete with 'Colemanballs'.

Have to say/intervene.

You all give Willo grief(as I have done), of his defence of Refs. Instead of targeting a poster who has his views/beliefs & has never officiated, why not ask, give grief to posters on here who HAVE refereed?

Is it because you don't want/like the answer you'll get? Or is it you don't like them? Asking for a poster.

I still feel robbed by Saturday and my respect level for officials is currently diminished.
However, hats off to people who ref grass roots on a Sunday morning for no reward. I also used to get sent off all the time when I did play. I'm like an angry Stuart Pearce without the silky skills or hair - or any resemblance whatsoever really. So I'm probably not the best to comment.
I suppose, we do have to think Premier League refs are highly paid and we could perhaps expect a bit more professionalism from them. It seems a bit of a mess currently but I do suspect new rules are causing a problem. It's all become subjective which is wholly unhelpful. A foul's a foul in reality and offside is offside. That's been getting more ambiguous the whole time - add in new handball rules and this is what you get in some ways.
