Your recollection is a little bit awry there. We signed Garry (sic) Thompson in 1990 when Ian Wright broke his leg (twice). He represented us with enthusiasm and played his part in keeping us in the First Division. As I recall, he didn't play much in 1990/91, with Ian Wright back to fitness.

Sorry - you are absolutely correct. I was trying to recall our lack of ambition. Was it Lee Sinnott that we signed after finishing 3rd?

I should really remember as the carve up between, the FA, UEFA and Liverpool still really pisses me off.

I remember liking Garry Thompson, considering he had the awful task of replacing Ian Wright while he was injured he did okay. He didn’t score many, but he had a presence up front and put himself about.

Yeah I really liked him. Proper old school number 9. Not great ability , but as game as they come.

I'm happy with staying up every season and maybe a good run in the cup

As depressing as it is, its really good context.

Most of the teams in the country would swap place with us in a heart beat.

That however doesn't always make it feel fun

I think most fans understand we will never have a sustained period of success at a club with our budget. I've never heard one fan expecting us to challenge for a champions league place. Only 9 different clubs have played in it since it rebranded, the big six, Leeds, Newcastle and Leicester after a fluke season.

There's been plenty of clubs that have qualified for the europa, we're only a few players short of having a genuine chance of competing for a European place and with the spine of our squad and the talent we have, I'm disappointed we didn't strengthen and have a real go this season. Its all about timing with a club our size and this seemed like the perfect season to build, but we've stood still. If we're lucky enough to keep doucoure, Guehi, andersen, eze and Olise for another season and we have as bad a window as this summer then I'll be disappointed next year aswell.

We have had a sustained period of success!

Imo. It's been fantastic and when I think that we were minutes away from not existing as a club before Steve et al saved us, I feel joy every time the team crosses the white line: fantastic.

When I first started supporting Palace in 1973 as a young man recently arrived in South London and thought about the club's history and then saw us relegated to the 3rd Division, the Holy Grail for me and my mates was to see the club not only reach the top league but become a stable member of it, The team of the 80s and the brief Wright/Bright era were fun whilst they lasted BUT they didn't last.

This current run is beyond what I thought ever possible especially after our yo-yo trips between the Championship and the PL in the nineties and the noughties. And, as you say, given we were minutes away from oblivion, this current period in the PL is sustained success.

Yes it would be nice to win a major domestic cup and have a season or two in Europe and these are not unachievable but the idea of us becoming a regular Champions League team is stretching things somewhat given our size, resources and the uneven playing field we compete in with the mega English clubs.

I just missed the team of the 80’s but, supporting from the 90s, I often scoffed at the thought we’d stay up for more than one season if… if we got promoted. Memories of Hopkin and Shipperley (I was right behind the goal in Cardiff, row 3!!) were fantastic but you knew what was to follow.

I maintain that the football fan should always want for more, that has to be the very nature of the affair. This current period is still beyond the wildest dreams I held as a youngster however and never lost on me. Losing an FA Cup final was disappointing but again, I thought it laughable to suggest I’d be there to see something like that at Wembley (Again, staring right back down the barrel at Punch as he hit it).

I’d love to see us really improve the team, push for Europe and God forbid win something, but we are living ‘sustained success’ currently.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
