I've been using the self scan tills for quite some time but they haven't introduced that here yet Yup My main shop is Beckenham and they don't have this exit gate either. I guess Penge has more of a problem with shoplifters but this isn't the answer. Sainsbury's are effectively branding their entire customer base as untrustworthy rather than targetting the criminals. Agreed. I have been forced to get a Nectar card because if you don't you pay rip off prices. At their Penge store they force you to use the self service tills but you are locked in you have to scan your sales ticket to leave so they are treating you like criminals. I hate all supermarkets but I think Sainsbury's is top of my list. All supermarkets with self serve tills will introduce those barriers where you have to scan your receipt to get out. Currently people can just walk through without paying and theft is rife.

So the supermarkets solution to shop lifting is to treat all their honest customers as criminals. Shoplifting is a serious problem but this is not the solution they might want to hire a couple of security guards instead of treating the majority of their customers like this.

The sort of security guards I see aren’t a deterrent, the chance of being prosecuted is minimal. Security barriers are the easy effective option. It no real hassle to swipe a receipt.
