It certainly seems we are all in agreement with the position the club is in and the lack of action to fill the glaring holes in the team.

The biggest conundrum I keep banging my head against the wall with is why, when you have £50m+available (in addition to the money for Lerma and also apparently money was there for a striker), that we bought a goalkeeper, a youngster and an old hand none of which are oven ready first team players. This just smacks of poor planning to me as there were plenty of players for both cash or loan out there to:

1) replace Wilf
2) replace Clyne and make Ward back up
3) replace Guaita with a an experienced no 2 keeper
4) replace Mateta (can’t believe we had a decent bid in for him too).

We knew Guaita wanted to leave, we knew Wilf wanted to leave, we’ve known for two years that a RB upgrade was required along with LB cover and everyone knows Mateta is not cut out for PL football. He is a Sorloth MkII and will probably do ok in less demanding leagues.

It all points to Dougie not being quite as agile in the market place as some would have us believe.

My mate normally spends about £24k a year on corporate tickets for Palace. He hasn’t this year for first time in a while and when asked why not he simply said, “when you put your hand in your pockets to buy some decent players to watch, so will I”. He’s kind of got a point.

If I go back to the summer a confused picture emerges.
Roy has said we were close to bringing in two new players, a left back/ midfield (Hall) and a striker (Etiteke).

The assumption must be that these were two positions that had been identified as needing to be strengthened and I doubt too may on here would disagree with that.

It was also known there was a problem with Guiata in the summer when he didn’t go on tour or join pre season training so we would need a second keeper.

We have ended up not strengthening the two two identified positions and instead opted to add where we are arguably strongest (centre back) and also bought a potential first choice keeper when we have a perfectly good one in Johnstone ( I know there are rumours on concerns re a release clause for him).

It may be there has been reasons for switching of targets that we are not privy to, but on the face of it, and having observed performances recently, it is difficult to understand.

Question - which is most likely?

1. A finished new main stand
2. Buying a 15 goal a season striker

Its very difficult to understand. Especially given how much in budget movement there was in the market.

The level of cover in some positions is pretty woeful, and a few injuries have shown the implications.

I still cant really believe that we didnt sign a ready made replacement for Wilf. I don't know if its disrespectful or ignorance given his contributions to the team over the last decade.

Thought this might 'cheer' people up, it's supposed to be the 15 worst signings we've made incl a current squad player. 15 players: 12 goals: 249 apps.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

We fans aren't privvy to what's going on behind the scenes at Palace.

You would like to think that the Henderson and Franca signings make sense to Freedman and Parish even if they don't to us at this moment in time.

It's hard to accept though, when you see glaring gaps that need to be filled in other positions.

I just don't understand our transfer buisness at all, I understand we don't have money but to use 20 million on a goalkeeper makes no sense. Also over 20 million on a 19 year old, great prospect yes, replacement for wilf, no, unless you're a generational great then any 19 year old clearly needs to develop. Probably not the best window to spend that money on one.

Also what's frustrating is there were players available. Traore, Hudson odi, gray etc would any have made us into world beaters, no, do they all have prem experience, yes, would they have improved our squad, yes.

I've noted from many comments on these forums there is a lot of discontent about our transfer policy e.g no Zaha replacement, no new full backs, no new striker, no loans brought in.
Furthermore, players brought in at goalkeeper and at centre back where we already have good players.
This is seen as misallocation of our scarce resources where we have glaring gaps elsewhere.
I can only assume the club are looking at the medium term as opposed to the immediate need.
It's likely to be Tomkins' last season and rumours continue around the future of Guehi and Anderson, so Holding may be viewed with the medium term in mind, particularly if the fee was reasonable.
The Henderson deal is a head scratcher for a number of reasons.
His injury record isn't great and Johnstone has done well.
It was generally thought we'd go for a talented and experienced back up instead.
Franca may well turn out to be a bargain, but it's a risk for a club of our stature
For £25 million we should be getting an immediate first team player.
I suppose the above highlights the discrepancy in approach between the fans and the club.
The fans want to see squad shortcomings dealt with now, whereas the club take a longer term view taking into account the terms of players' contracts which we are unfamiliar with.
Ideally you'd want to be able to do both, but this is evidently defeating us at present.

Parish like most good businessmen is thinking long term, most fans think very short term and thus it will ever be.

There's a Roy Hodgson sized flaw in that argument !

So Sorloth, Mateta, Meyer, to name but 3 of a long list was thinking long term?

They do make mistakes you know and spunking £40+million on an injury prone keeper and an unproven youngster could prove to be the latest in a long list.

If they come good then great, but you can’t call taking a chance, thinking for the future. It’s not like they came to us free of charge.

I think you will also find that the large majority of CEO’s are the most short termist people you’ve ever come across.

It doesn't matter how good a businessman he is, long term we will never be anywhere near the big 6, 7 now with Newcastle. We will never be a top 10 club long term. We will only ever have short term success anyway.
