Fair dinkum. I guess I've chosen the right film for the thread then! I first saw '2001' at the Dominion, Tottenham Court Road. It was some kind of re-run after it had been restored or something like that. Maybe having seen it on such a massive screen formed my opinion, although I admit it must now appear very dated and low-tech in comparison to more recent sci-fi. You could’ve hit the nail on the head there, I was only a young kid so didn’t see it when it originally came out when it obviously had its biggest impact. I can’t remember when I first watched it, probably the 80’s, but I remember expecting so much more and was disappointed with the ending. I’ve watched it again a couple of times, but obviously it’s the sort of film that needs the intrigue of not having seen it before, so it still didn’t do it for me

When the credits rolled i could have happily sat through it again. It's a great film that I've seen loads of times and back in the day we even went to a fancy dress party as the Soggy Bottom Boys

Not quite what you asked but having spent a small fortune on expensive speakers in the walls and ceiling plus a giant American subwoofer I now don't like to watch any film over 90 minutes as I can't stay awake any longer than that

Clarke wrote based on the film. **Plot Spoiler** effectively Bowman returns as a kind-of super-being (God??) to protect the Earth from the human race's inevitable destruction of it. The short story was called 'The Sentinel' ie whoever educated the apes and sparked the ascent of man, put in place on the moon a beacon (the sentinel) that would send a warning across the universe when Man became clever enough to unearth it,,,,and thus clever enough to destroy the planet.

I love '2001: A Space Odyssey' which I consider to be Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, based on a short story by Arthur C. Clarke. However, I've shown it to Mrs YT and the two Miss YTs but I may as well have shown them a blank screen. My son and I have agreed that it is hugely overrated. Boring, fragmented, dated and with a confusing ending. Give me Alien, Aliens, Forbidden Planet, Planet of The Apes or The Thing any day. High concept cerebral sci fi is better in books. A two hour movie just doesn't have the time to do it justice. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (01 Oct 2023 3.01pm)
