My assumption... is that the assumption racial abuse has been directed at a 'black' player would be given the prominence of 'black' players in the league alongside a predominantly 'non-black' crowd, the prominence of social commentary on racial abuse against 'black' folk and the history behind it all. It may well not have been but equally may well have. Whomever it is directed at when it occurs is not only beyond idiocy for the nature of it itself but also the lack of awareness for policing of it within society these days. 'Benchwarmer' is not something I would consider to be a typical thing to be shouted from the crowd at a player and even if so would be hard to conflate with racial abuse. You'd also hope anyone in the crowd would hear it as clearly as the player (Hwang apparently) and jump to the alleged offender's defence when they are removed. If the person is guilty then they'll hopefully experience the consequences of doing something so thick, if they are innocent I would equally hope the matter will be resolved and a very sincere apology issued by all those involved to this individual. Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I don't really see why the English leagues have to be nice to an IRA supporter? What would the Irish league be like for some kind of Unionist going on parade for the glorious 12th? The reported facts are that the police arrested someone following a complaint of racist abuse. They and the CPS will have to decide whether the evidence supports a charge under the relevant law and its definition. It's nothing whatsoever to do with sectarianism abuse and whether that's been sufficiently dealt with, nor is it to do with abuse against gay people, Jewish people or nasty violent people. Unless you are perhaps suggesting that racist abuse allegations shouldn't be pursued because lots of other potential abuse happens to not be pursued? Palace since 19 August 1972. What has any of this to do with yesterday's alleged incident? The reported facts are that the police arrested someone following a complaint of racist abuse. They and the CPS will have to decide whether the evidence supports a charge under the relevant law and its definition. It's nothing whatsoever to do with sectarianism abuse and whether that's been sufficiently dealt with, nor is it to do with abuse against gay people, Jewish people or nasty violent people. Unless you are perhaps suggesting that racist abuse allegations shouldn't be pursued because lots of other potential abuse happens to not be pursued?

a) censor ALL abuse,
or
b) allow total freedom of speech...even the nasty.

What we cannot do is pick and choose which abuse to allow and which to censor. Try being a gay footballer in Jamaica ? Or an English footballer in Argentina.

Sadly this DIY policing is rather too common. On the canals they have various social media groups to warn people about stuff and even individuals.

When even the Home Secretary can't get the police to focus on real crime instead of hurty words what chance have the rest of us.
