Ayew's record as a striker isn't that impressive; but then he's not a striker really and we shouldn't let the fact that he was willing to do a job for a club who'd managed to land themselves with two sick notes and no other options to fill the role blind us to that. Maybe if he gets a chance to play consistently in his best position on the left side of attack, opinions of him will improve. Personally I think he's very hard-working, turns up pretty much every game and he's always willing to give whatever's asked of him his best shot; love him to pieces.

Thanks Charles. Saved me having to say it.

159 Premier league apps, with 18 goals, and 13 assists, isn't very good is it, for all his hard work and effort, at the end of the day he is a bench warmer.

it's funny how you can use statistics to support an argument.

Whilst i predominantly agree with the above it could be argued he's played for 3 quite 'weak' prem teams, often doesn't play as a striker and those appearances include a fair few as a sub.

His versatility, his lack of injuries and his cheapness (in Prem terms) makes him a valuable squad player IMHO.

Just as a comparison Olise has 4 league goals in over 60 games for Palace.

With the free kicks Zaha and Ayew get, we should work feverishly on set pieces. I can't help but feel it's not Roy's priority, however. I've thought the same for years, frankly. Probably boring everyone with it now. Our free kick conversion rate cannot be great. By my reckoning Zaha and Ayew won over 100 free kicks in scoring areas. I reckon we scored maybe four - all off the top of my head. I doubt I'm right but it's what it seemed like. I guess one issue is Guehi is not really your heading centre back.
Hilariously, Leeds were great against us but rubbish at defending, passing and open play.
We're also noticeably poor at defending set pieces - we were certainly targeted by a few teams that way.

No goals.

Personally I agree with the OP but we need a goal a scorer

Couldn't help reading that with an Italian accent, Silver!

1) His demeanor. Because he seldom expresses joy or even satisfaction with his own efforts or those of his teammates, fans infer that he is always underperforming.

2) His position. Because he plays the peculiar role of defensive striker/attacker, he'll never be "appreciated."

3) His production. As others have said, he's most skilled at drawing fouls in key positions, but our inability to convert the free kicks leaves fans unfairly frustrated with him. His own skill at finishing has also been absent in recent years, a lack which he himself would acknowledge.

I highly value his work rate. Only Conor Gallagher's and Marc Guehi's have been comparable, and they have far younger legs and more upbeat miens. While he has often missed good scoring chances, he has hardly ever played without abundant energy, purpose, and discipline. In that regard he's a model professional.

Say what?? I can honestly say even with all the modern buzz words in football and me being of the dinosaur age, I’ve never heard of a defensive striker

Wasnt Ayew the most fouled player in the prem league last season? Or second to grealish.

A very useful and consistent utility player, hence his many first team starts. Better than Zaha last season once he moved over to the left side, no prannying about and much more of a team player. Also if he happened to be the penalty taker then his stats would be far more respectable. One of our best value for money signings in recent years.

He is used by managers as an outlet from defence. If we are under pressure, defenders try to get it to him upfield, he rarely loses it and gets a foul, allowing the team to move upfield. If they kick it to Edouard or Mateta it comes back it comes back double quick.

Probably bollocks but make of it what you will.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
