Medical workers.....underpaid, over-worked heroes, with good academic grades. Often working a job that nobody wants or is capable of doing. TFL workers.....the opposite The main lesson I take from this is that unions work.

There you go. Express readers genuinely believe they earn £100k plus and now demand 35% more. A similar disconnect between people's perception of what solicitors and accountants earn and what they actually earn. Electricians and plumbers might be astonished to know they considerably out earn their lawyers! Fully qualified lawyer & accountant proably earn upwards of £80k, in private sector £90-£100k with experience. Similar to an NHS Doctor - £60k + allowances - most then work in the private sector as well so will be earning £90-£100k Again these all have similar salaries - none are a job I want. Sales, delivery directors, they are on £100k + with experience & OTE. So all in all they are all on about the same. The whole thing with Public sector is the perks, job security & pensions. Do I think Junior doctors deserve 35% pay rise - Hell no, Do I think any of the current PS pay rises are justified again - no. We need to reform the PS perks & pensions then yes by all means have a chunky pay rise, you also see your pay go up as you are not paying 10% into your pension. The thing is - none of these get paid anywhere near as low as a Costa Barrister. Now S****es, Plumbers & Builders, they all earn £15k a year drive the nicest cars & live in big houses!

Junior Doctors are the workhorses of the NHS. How they cope is beyond me, heroes treated like donkeys. 35% is nothing, this situation has been going on for many years, I well remember thanking one for treating my son and realising how drained and exhausted he was. Normal people leave a job that does that to them. What on earth could be their motivation to carry on ?

Your solicitor and accountant figures are City rates. You need to be 20 plus years experienced to get anywhere near that elsewhere and will never reach it if you do family, crime, wills etc in law or basic high street accounting work. High pay is a myth partly borne from a time when professionals came from an affluent background, had money to begin with and inherited money and property later. They also sounded posh so assumptions were made.
