Assuming each student bringing dependents brings an average of 2, that means more than 80% don't. Those that do are hardly a drain on our resources, are they? They come to keep families together and most must be sponsored in some way. Interesting How much is the visa and how long does the process take? How much is the NHS surcharge? Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I suppose it's because their time here is fairly short and there will be conditions attached to the sponsorship about returning home so no risks are seen. What proportion are government-sponsored isn't known to me. Other international student dependents cannot work. The visa fee is £490 per head. The NHS surcharge is £470 pa per head. Each dependent must prove they have sufficient money available to them to live, on top of that the student must show they have. That is £845 per month in London and £680 per month elsewhere. If they won't be living with the student then they must also prove where they will live and how it will be paid for. People on visas are expected to cover their own costs.

If anyone thinks I am going to name my employer they will be disappointed. They aren't though among those names. It seems they have fallen down the list a little since the last time I checked. Not that it makes a lot of difference when you have several billions to your name.

Back to your old ways of attempted self aggrandisement, you've been doing quite well for a few weeks but old habits die hard. So just to be clear, when you write "One of my employers, now in the top 5 wealthiest people in Switzerland", this is not true Edited by HKOwen (24 May 2023 12.09am)

It's ok to be wrong I have not copied your pompous " you do know " which looks very silly when you're wrong The per capita NHS spend in the UK is somewhere north of GBP 3000 per head so a surcharge of 470 is not going to cover the cost. It was just an example from experience. They were in the top 5 when I last checked, but I don't stay up to date on these things. They got there after selling some of their businesses and retiring. Since then they have been a philanthropist, which could account for the slip down the list. So no. it's apparently no longer true, but it was and perhaps I should have anticipated the pile-on of critics eager to nit pick.

Edited by HKOwen (24 May 2023 2.10am) Per capita means per head. That covers every age group. The cost to the NHS is much lower, on average, for younger people than the elderly. We are discussing students and their family members. Most of whom are younger people. It's OK to be wrong.

There is something in all this I am missing, I think. What is wrong with people coming here to work and study? I work in hospitality and we are having to close areas of economic activity because of lack of staff. Perhaps Govt could look at population policy generally, work out what we need and allocate resources for NHS etc, accordingly. The economy will not grow without people to work, however you cut it, and if people wish to work here that should be welcomed. Or, as I say, I'm missing something. But I've lost money due to lack of workers !

There are millions of inactive workers in the country but the government and business would rather import more than persuade those who are on the taxpayer's dime to take these jobs. The scale of immigration for the last 30 years has been enormous which has led to strains on public services.

Family members for students are not limited by age, dependents can include parents or even grand parents. Thank you for explaining what per capita means though
