I don't think we'll lose Olise this season. He's done well, but not well enough IMO to persuade the big boys to pay the 60/70m we should be demanding. If Wilf does go, I'd take his c.130k wage and spit it across EE, MO, CD, JA, MG. Demonstrate that they are important to us and try and tie them all in a bit longer.

I too have noticed him, one of the good things about the Palace TV option is you get a chance to see the U21 games & become more familiar with the players participating, however even on TV its clear that there is an enormous difference between whats going on the Copers Cope pitch in front of maybe 300 people & being in the first team in front of a packed Selhurst Park surrounded by better players on both sides working to much finer margins & considerable stakes vested in the outcome - its no wonder that so many first team coaches (if they have a choice) would rather see a club buy someone who is first team ready rather than risk untried academy product. The amount of money involved in first team success or failure at PL level significantly restricts clubs willingness to gamble on relative youngsters. Much of the time you can tell how close a Premiership club consider a youngster to their first team by the league standard of loan they give him. Saki for example, has had a very successful loan at league one level. It's likely that he will be tried at Championship grade before a final decision is made.

I think his buy out clause is much lower than that.

Anyone remember Brendon Pierrick? It was only 3 years ago I see him come on as a sub up at Norwich and I thought, he looks lively and one for the future. Well I watch a few of my local non-league teams highlights on YouTube and I noticed he’s playing for Dover Athletic at the wrong end of the national league south. This is why I never get too involved in following our youth set up and wondering why more are not given a chance in the first team. Apart from the odd Gem as in Wilf, AWB and Mitchell most of our youngsters are just not good enough for premier league or even lower. Non-league is littered with our ex-youngsters who’s name I recognise and were supposed to be the next big thing off the production line Edited by monkey (02 May 2023 10.50am)

It’s also not just the ability to play football, as we all know attitude, injuries, dedication and a dozen other influences affect a young lad.

Much will depend on what happens re the players out of contract and who is brought in (if anyone) in the transfer window. I suspect Rak-Sakyi may well be sent out on loan to a Championship club and that both Wells-Morrison and Ozoh will be loaned out to League 1 or 2 clubs. There is then the question of those coming back from loans. IMHO only Adamarola is ready to step up and challenge Mitchell for the LB spot. He certainly offers more going forward. Edited by doombear (01 May 2023 11.53am) For me the 3 who could make the step up next season are Rak-Sakyi, Phillips and O'Brien. All 3 have had successful loans and there will be spaces in the squad (Philips for Macca and O'Brien for Tomkins, for example). R-S still looks raw, but has goals in him. I think having him on the bench as an impact sub would be ideal. The current bench looks very unexciting - about 4 centre mids and 2 strikers who rarely score! Ebiowei and Plange don't appear to have pushed on, which is a shame. Hopefully after a good pre season we can reassess - maybe another loan for each. I had high hopes for Adamarola but he seems to have stalled a bit. Not even on the bench when Mitchell was suspended tells a story.

Good summary and insightful, enjoyed reading that and reflected my (very limited) knowledge!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

The first isn't exactly great. O'Brien has done well but he needs game time in the Championship assuming that a club will take him on loan. As for Plange and Ebiowei neither have covered themselves in glory and need to pull their socks up. Back on loan for both of them and if they don't impress next season let them go. Adamarola is an odd one he had a disastrous spell at Coventry with rumours that the manager never wanted him anyway. That can be forgiven however back in our youth team he is only doing okay as far as I can see so no justification in promoting him. Edited by Badger11 (02 May 2023 11.26am)

I think JRS will go on loan to the Champ as like others have said, he is unlikely to oust Olise. You don't hear of many players who failed at league one or Championship level but then made the grade at PL level. The best players tend to shine at every level. Killian Phillips and JRS are probably the most likely at the moment just because they've both had strong seasons at a professional level. I could see the former filling Luka's role as a back-up midfielder getting 15-20 minutes at the end of games. Then again, Ahamada was proving himself at a higher level in the Bundesliga and he's not getting a look in. Much will probably come down to two things: are the club going to invest in the squad and who is the manager going to be next season. If Wilf goes and we don't replace him JRS will probably have to come back out of necessity.

As for Ahamada, he's very much one for next season. Coming in as he did in January into a squad that struggled for 3 months meant he was only going to get limited opportunities under Vieira. TBF Hodgson has been positive about him but made it quite clear that in a relegation fight you go for experience and that's what has happened. It will also be interesting to see which academy players get the push this summer.
