With the mackems now interested in taking JRS on loan, could a deal for Clarke be fine on loan with option to buy?

We should go in hard at £25m and might get him.

Sunderland look unlikely to make the play offs this season, unless they gain momentum from any any new manager bounce - (7 points adrift but still 13 games to play) so any offer in the summer for a player they are likely to want to keep is going to have to be substantial.

I don't get why the offer needs to be substantial if Sunderland don't make the play off's ? Surely if they don't make the play off's then Clarke is going to start to get itchy feet ( presuming he want's to play in the premier league ) and Sunderland's revenue string is going to be less with no play off games and no promotion. A substantial offer would perhaps be needed if Sunderland did get promotion but i don't see this happening. It will be Leeds, Leicester, Southampton or Ipswich in my opinion.

One would assume that they would want to keep a talented player who would be a key part of the following years campaign - Where would you find a replacement / how much would one cost them ? Also a brief look at profit & sustainability for Sunderland this morning doesn't glaringly suggest that they are going to be forced to sell prized assets to balance the numbers.
