With the mackems now interested in taking JRS on loan, could a deal for Clarke be fine on loan with option to buy?

Wasn’t it said that he didn’t want to move south again and was also happy at Sunderland?
He may not have been available for a transfer especially at the low fee we would have been trying to sign him for.

Probably could have got him for the 15m we spent on a now injured back up keeper. Frustrating.

We should go in hard at £25m and might get him.

Sunderland look unlikely to make the play offs this season, unless they gain momentum from any any new manager bounce - (7 points adrift but still 13 games to play) so any offer in the summer for a player they are likely to want to keep is going to have to be substantial.

I don't get why the offer needs to be substantial if Sunderland don't make the play off's ? Surely if they don't make the play off's then Clarke is going to start to get itchy feet ( presuming he want's to play in the premier league ) and Sunderland's revenue string is going to be less with no play off games and no promotion. A substantial offer would perhaps be needed if Sunderland did get promotion but i don't see this happening. It will be Leeds, Leicester, Southampton or Ipswich in my opinion.

One would assume that they would want to keep a talented player who would be a key part of the following years campaign -
No to mention the challenges / costs that they would face trying to replace him - 23 / 24 years old, capable of scoring 20 + goals a season in the championship - (currently their top scorer with 15 goals this season with 13 games remaining)

Where would you find a replacement / how much would one cost them ?

Also a brief look at profit & sustainability for Sunderland this morning doesn't glaringly suggest that they are going to be forced to sell prized assets to balance the numbers.
