Chance conversion adds some context to things.

Both Edouard ad JPM have missed 2 big chances each. It demonstrates nothing more than the fact that we don't give them many big chances.

Whilst Edouard has a Shot conversion rate of 8.8%, JMP is down at 2.9%. It feels awful, but its similar to plenty of other good finishers (Ronaldo, Eriksen, De Bruyne etc) and some notoriously bad ones e.g. Welbeck. So potentially more of a indication that he isn't afraid to shoot, or that the chances we give him are difficult chances. Which I think is fair.

For us, Wilf has missed the most big chances, at 4. But does have a better than average Shot conversion rate at 11.8%

I still think there is a good enough player in JPM, he's shown he can finish, and quite outrageously. Our issue, as its been for many seasons is not getting enough crosses into the box. Statistically 1 of the worst in the league.

There are not many, so someone could work it out easily, but how many of JPM's goals for Palace were from crosses? I suspect 75%+

Maybe we should cross more...maybe inverted wingers limits our strikers best chance of scoring?

We all know creation of chances is a weakness of ours, however I would also like to see our strikers busting a gut to get in the right position. Olise has already proven he can ping a ball on a sixpence if you find the correct space.

Didn’t want to start a new thread but just saw in the athletic that Viera admitted that he’s dissapointed in Edouard and hopes he’s hurt he’s not started last few games. He wants more from him… interesting maybe this means edouard is lazy in training etc? Hopefully viera is right and edouard come out flying.

I still have hope for Eduoard. There's a player in there. Might be a confidence issue or we/he just haven't been able to get the best out of him. There's more to his game than Mateta has. Fingers crossed anyway.

I maybe over optimistic and hopeful here but could end up being great management from viera , as dropping eze and edouard last few games to rile them up then come back for rest of season and tear it up?
We will see

It was reported last year that there were issues with his work rate when he played for Celtic, however he was playing in a top side in Scotland and he averaged a goal every 2 games for them.

I was in conversation with a former PL scout and he expressed the opinion, like you, that there is a player in there.

As I said when he signed his style can be a bit off-putting. He's a little like Berbatov in that he never seems to be busting a gut and tends to place the ball rather than blast it - he does take a good free kick though.

Chance conversion rate stats can mislead, in that they often suggest the highest scoring players are also the most wasteful. In fact what those stats capture is the extent to which the better players make runs, move in the box, get on the end of things and try to test goalkeepers whenever possible. Even the greats will 'miss' as often as they score, it's better to think of it as knocking on the door.

What the stats don't show is the utter paucity of movement, sharp hold up and combination play, and selfless running to stretch the opposition defence that our strikers display. That kills us as an attacking team.

Mateta is nowhere near good enough for the league, but is also a limiting presence for the other attacking players who are up to scratch. Eze and Olise have excellent passing ability, but nobody on the move to pass to. Zaha keeps the ball for far too long because its better than giving it to our forwards.

Finally, Mateta is a good example of how hard and unlikely it is to find a hidden gem in that position at our level. He has size, was the right age and had a little purple patch in Germany, we gambled, and lost.

About sums it up. Cost us £10m in Jan 22, scored 7 goals in 49 appearances. Not all 90 minutes admittedly. If that’s the cost of doing business at that level it explains why top strikers cost the earth.

Compare him with a centre back and they'd have more goals.
