if i was to retire to 'a place in the sun', i would defo try to avoid drunken hooligan brits. So Benidorm is a no no. Whereas some Southern City or town, at least 100 miles inland from the sea ? maybe.

so maybe Zagreb, Sofia, Toulouse or Salamanca. Who cares if its cold in January. The rest of the year is nice and the cost of living is cheap. And no drunken brits puking and fighting in the streets.

Benni is a lot better than it used to be, one of our HOLer's lives far end of Levante Beach. 10k further along coast towards Alicante is a place called El Campello, its mainly a 'Spanish' resort, but, there it a thriving British ex-pats community(i know this). You just need to do your homework.

From what I understand this is simply a glorified planning initiative.

Translation, make peoples lives easier and ensure it's less about luck or status as to whether you have access to essential and beneficial amenities.

Personally I think it's more of a planning concept, i.e. have hubs within cities so most of the time you're 15-20 mins walk away from the essentials.

However, I don't think this is particularly cost effective to retrofit. Planning a new city or town, fine. Makes sense.

Weirdly people have taken it to mean dystopian fenced off quarantine zones, guarded by the military and where you need to show ID to leave and enter. Riiight

Sounds good to me, as long as the area in question is easy to develop according to that approach. Needs to be applied to suitable candidate areas only to avoid massive waste on consultancy fees and ballooning budgets.
