I don't deny you make a fair point MrR, we must assume our scouting staff have decided he's worth a punt. On a personal level I'm not convinced when I look at some of the players we've brought in. I've now started to fantasise about a match between the Irish youth and Palace's youngsters. Not sure that's a strong point in favour of Umeh, but it would be fun to test it out.

These signings are throwing s*** against a wall and hoping some of it sticks. We've had one after another over the years...Scott Banks (now starring at Bradford City) was the latest Celtic messiah a couple of years ago but it goes all the way back to Rory Ginty and Brian Launders and beyond. I've nothing against this sort of deal; it makes sense and is always worth the gamble hoping eventually one of them comes good but let's be honest, it's nothing to get excited about.
We have a significant increase in the number of players we've sent out on loan this year including 7 to EFL clubs. The important thing is that they are getting to play men's football. Most of them will end up plying their trade in one of the lower leagues but the occasional one will rise to the top. Gallagher's first loan was to Charlton and as for Harry Kane, his was to Leyton Orient. We hope (and pray) that at least one of ours currently out on loan will also rise to the top in due course.

Essentially... yep. 'You never know...'
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

The U18s and U21s are an essential part of CPFC. They play top PL football in their own right and compete with the likes of Man.City Arsenal Spurs etc. Their games are largely free of the general cheating and theatrics of the Premier League, and blissfully no VAR. A pass to watch on Palace TV is very affordable, watching their development and with some success, is very satisfying. A great CPFC development we never had any of this before, thank you SP. COYP

I guess somebody has decided that if we can't afford top notch players he next best thing is to go young and hope one comes through. Considering most of us complain when palace don't go looking hard enough in the lower leagues I would have thought we would welcome this strategy.

There was a young Norwegian lad a few years ago that was going to take the Premier League by storm but he didn't last and quietly crept away after a couple of years in the development squad

The article says he can’t join until he is 18, so I take it he is 17 and hasn’t joined

OK, so he's worth a Euro.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Sorry, but that's rubbish. I was at the FA Youth Cup Semi-Final at Plough Lane in 1996, when we were beaten by a West Ham team that fielded teenagers Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard. There's nothing remotely new about top class youth football at the Palace.
Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God. |
