Not good enough. He’s one of our own so gets given a lower bar of expectation imo. Offers nothing going forward; he’s of AWB mould but not as good. We need competition in both full back positions. I’m sure pat would replace TM with a player that suits the style he wants to play if he could but there’s other pressing areas

I thought he played quite well. We were up against it but Mitchell was solid enough and certainly seemed up to speed. We do need someone to cover though as clearly Mitchell gets tired, understandably. Maybe use Reidewald a bit more - as he usually seems better than expected. I don't remember him being too bad at left back when required before. I guess the other options are Schlupp (poor in my opinion at LB), or Richards (largely untried and not really a LB), Clyne or Ward (naturally right backs so not ideal), or a youngster - there are a couple. Oh yes, the other that can play there - no idea what he is like - the forgotten man, Ferguson (naturally CD or right back).

There was a huge clamour to f*** PVA off and get Tyrick in who's done well IMO.

My impression was that PVA was a bell end. Despite that he's still the best left back during my time apart from Sansom. Cole was never our player.

PVA would have made a massive difference to the current team IMO.

PVA was insanely good.

PVA was insanely good.

Apart from defending, which was his main role.

I agree - he had no defensive awareness, positional sense or strength. He was good going forward and probably would have fitted in with Vieira's style. Not with Roy's though.

In bygone days full-backs traditionally tended to be defensive players. As the game has developed, full-backs have grown in importance in attack: the term ‘modern full-back’ highlights the position’s all-round contribution in the modern game.

I know mate - but in my opinion they do need to be able to defend too.

I have a dear friend and we have had a few conversations about the evolution of the role of full-back since the days when he played in this position as a professional at league clubs in the 70s and 80s.

Modern full-backs have to be extremely fit and hard-working, willing and able to chase back after a loss of possession to protect the areas outside the centre-backs. They need to cover long distances to chase the ball down after an opposition switch of play.
The modern full-back also has to be agile, fast and smart with their defensive positioning, and therefore able to defend effectively in one-on-one situations.

I used to play right or centre back. In the past all the same at my level. Cream the player and whack the ball upfield.

I don’t rate Tyrick. An upgrade is needed. I would take PVA over him and day if the week.

I don’t rate Tyrick either. Beaten far too easily in one on one situations and offers very little going forward. We are weak in both fullback positions.
