Agree, good points made. Early rounds of cups do feature players who do not play international matches. However, we cannot go too far as finals (and semi finals) are festive events best played when the sun shines.

League Cup semi-finals are played early in the calendar year, generally in February although last season in January. I'm not sure how much sun you expect in those months on the Costa del Purley.

Furthermore, the League Cup was established as - and as far as I'm aware it remains as - a mid-week floodlit competition.

Do care about this cup, especially as I think the traditional top 6 won't give a toss about it once they see the state their players return from the World Cup in and their European fixtures begin.

However, Newcastle away was probably the worst possible draw - the best, non-distracted team who are also the furthest away. Our big helper is that Chelsea is a massive game for Newcastle on Saturday.

Would expect something like:

Johnstone

Ward Tomkins Guehi Adaramola

Luka

Ebiowei Riedewald Hughes Schlupp

Mateta

Yep I'd go for something like this...as I'd like to rest as many as possible for Forest.

Since most of the top sides rest their first team its a really good shout.

As has been said shame those running the game had that lobotomy!

My first game was after we won that. A 0-0 draw with Everton. I think Andy Gray missed a penalty. I suppose you could say I was a glory hunter.

BTW, my tune regarding this cup will probably change if we reach the semis!

Personally I wouldn't be too upset if we were knocked out by Newcastle. The 2nd half of the season, or rather the bit after the World Cup, is going to be pretty congested any way what with having to make up for the 6 weeks lost to the WC, plus the postponed United and Brighton matches.

Normally I wouldn't mind a run in the League Cup but not this season.

As for the team on Wednesday, it would be an opportunity to give some fringe players an outing, but I guess it will depend on PV's take on the importance of the game.

As most of our players won't play until boxing day, just one more on Saturday, rest for Ayew, Schlupp, Doucoure, Olise, Clyne, Guita but all on the bench. COYP

I think Newcastle will see this as an opportunity to win a trophy this season, so I expect them to field a strong team against us.

From our side, I think some squad players will get some game time and maybe some more youngsters included in the squad.

Some interesting proposals about how to improve this competition, but unless there are £££ involved, the football authorities simply don't care.

I tend to agree with this. Newcastle can afford to care about it far more than us. They will want (even expect) silverware one day, whereas we dream of silverware one day.

Only 2 games until the World Cup, I would start exactly the same team that started against West Ham. I would love to win even the league cup
