I won a CD once on a local radio phone-in competition called "What have I got in my Hand"? The DJ gave the clue that it was black and white. Having listened to inane guesses from other listeners such as a dice or a newspaper, I thought I'd give my idea a go. Having got through the DJ asked if I'd got anything to contribute to the other ongoing topic on his show that night, that of ever having had sex at work. Not wanting to get drawn on this, I said that I couldn't comment because of my job. I'd already given a false name on phoning in (Denis) and then said that I was the dentist at Holloway Prison. This caused a bit of excitement the other end of the line but I stuck to my principles and reiterated that I'd only phoned in to tell him what he had that was black and white in his hand, and that I thought it was a nun in a Newcastle kit. A fanfare followed because apparently this is exactly what he had in his hand that night, but I can only assume that the CD I won ended up being sent to a bemused dentist at Holloway Prison.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

I have been encouraged on numerous occasions to apply to be a contestant on 'Millionaire' and 'The Chase' but I haven't summed up the ardour to do so. Alas at my advancing age (70 this month) my recall is not as brisk as in days gone by and my knowledge of a multitude of facts has waned as the years have advanced. Quizzed the other day, I did provide the correct answer apropos the capital of Burkino Faso and the World's largest nocturnal primate ! Should in a moment of weakness or stupidity I do apply and get selected, rest assured I shall announce this on HOL. Edited by Willo (04 Nov 2022 1.00pm)

When I was about 13 years old I went on a computer gameshow that was aired on the Childrens channel called HeadtoHead hosted by Violet Berlin. I had to play against other People on Pete Sampras Tennis on the Sega Mega Drive. I dominated & beat all 10 opponents and was invited back to play Champions of Champions at the end of the year & have the chance to win a remote control helicopter although I few weeks later the show was cancelled & I never got to go back. Heres a link - not me playing but you get the idea
The mountains are calling & I must go. |

Back in the day - early 80s - I often used to get through to late night phone-ins on Capital Radio. Some of these were 'just for fun' ie to get to give out your dedications, but others were for a small prize. This was in the days of dial-up landline phones, and I found it surprisingly easy to get through by dialing the number as each record finished playing, but holding back on the final digit, then dialing that digit as the question or invitation to call in was given out. It was actually quite exciting when you got through, but bear in mind that Palace were providing very little to get the pulse racing in those days. I won a fair few pieces of tat but some better things like a Walkman, 'professional' Frisbee etc. One prize, which I still use on holiday each year, was a boule set from France that wasn't available in the UK.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

Not been on a game show, but I was on Blue Peter when I was a kid in the 70’s. One of my class mates dad was part of the production team and they wanted some boys to kick a ball about in the background for a football feature The same dad was also part of the Jim’ll Fix It team, my mate was regularly seen as one of the kids sitting in front of Saville on the programme, I was asked to go once for filming, but I wasn’t well, I was gutted at the time, but obviously now I dodged a bullet there!!
