I hope not! They are 10 times worse than what the country have now! And the worst opposition in the history of oppositions! They are just another yes party for the EU! Bad luck mate - look at the polls. We've been taxed and charged to the hilt for years. The populists will have it now. They don't even need to do anything. The incompetence and corruption of the current government does their entire job for them. The election will be like stealing candy from a baby. Only that candy will have a bitter taste once chewed.

Let's see what happens in the next couple of years and as with Boris and even more rapidly with Truss these things are panning out now. Tips hat.

Italy's voters wanted a solution to energy , the cost of living, Putin, covid and plenty more of their ills, they are ripe for someone to lift them and blame everything on others. Here is a simple populist patriotic way out of all those things bash the immigrants and Brussels etc long live Italy etc.etc. Its actually quite similar to the UKs current delusion that by borrowing vast sums of money in this case for welfare (not exactly what we mean by far-right) somehow this is solving something. Wishful thinking, they didn't make the World Cup either, a psychological blow. Fortunately it will be a coalition (she has 26%) and this may fade away after a few months trading with Berlusconi ad others.
Sounds about right to me. I don't know enough about Meloni to have a firm view, but the speech linked in this thread was worthy of Trump. Full of populist passion and void of actual ideas. Selling people things based on their prejudices and convincing them that anything is better than what they have, has been the stock-in-trade of opposition politicians since the dawn of time. Only idiots think noise will actually produce solutions when faced with the actual realities of governing. Time will tell whether the rhetoric will give way to practical ideas which work. Having Berlusconi as a partner isn't a good omen for that. I was briefly in Rome, Naples and Cagliari recently and sensed none of the tensions that some of the political reporting seems to suggest. People seemed happy, prosperous and integrated. I accept I was mainly in tourist areas, but did travel on local transport into less salubrious districts.

Especially financially. - ethnics who live here, but refuse to learn English, deserve a free Translation service. Especially if they get into trouble with the Law. - the girls who are the victims of Rape gangs need to put up and shut up for the sake of diversity. This italian election is for the centre-right. The new Italian PM says she is leading a centre-right unity coalition, that's if she can get it together. The 'markets' have not over-reacted and its now cheaper to borrow money for Italy than it is for the UK. Clumsy and out of touch with reality, that would be more of a judgement on us, not Sweden or Italy. Sorry BBC and others, but 'Il Duce' is not riding again. And Italian trains, as ever, will be reliably un-punctual.

Italian trains are generally very punctual, cheap and clean. UK could do worse than implement the same mix of public and private that Italy has in the train system.

Luckily you don't have an obsession with Trump.....hang on. I applaud your braving local transport to venture into less salubrious districts. Presumably you are fluent in Italian?

Perhaps you should have gone further South on the mainland. Are you calling her an idiot? Or just those that have the audacity to want change and place their vote on the right?

My last visit trains were fine! I do however remember, upon leaving Bologna, asking if I could smoke on the train (in very broken Italian)? The ticket inspector looked at me with a raised eyebrow and said 'no'. It was then that I pointed to the fold-out ashtray at the side of my table with a couple of dog-ends in it. Follia!
