Went once - want to go again. Have fond memory of watching a gentleman using his eighteen inch machete to prepare coconuts so that his customers could enjoy the milk, while a P C looked happily on. We are streetwise as far as going to football is concerned - all NHC visitors need to take that care of themselves.

Sounds delightful. I don't get that het up about the NHC (outside of people insisting on referring to it as 'Carnival'. If it was the only one in the world or even the first one then fine. But it's not). People have fair warning about what it is going to be like and therefore have a choice about going on not. I choose not to go. I feel sorry for the cops who have to put with all that s*** but they chose to do the job knowing full well it would come with policing the NHC so it is just part and parcel of it all. It's appropriation of a noun. Like Gay Pride is now just 'Pride'. Imagine if the Armed Forces ran a celebration of the end of WWII each year and named it 'Pride'. Lawyers would no doubt be employed to dispute the unauthorised use of a brand name.

I suppose I was being a bit flippant, so I don't really know. But it wouldn't surprise me as the word has been stamped prettily much into the ethos of the 'gay community'.

A total of 209 arrests were made, 34 police were assaulted and a man was brutally stabbed to death. The same situation year-on-year,it is high time that the 'Notting Hill Carnage' was banned but the chance of this is ZERO.

I say this as someone of Jamaican descent and someone who attended Carnival this weekend (Sunday) and for previous years.... but NHC needs to go, be regulated or concept changed completely. It's an amazing event when you're part of the very high percent of people who go and come across no drama. There were more than 2 million people who attended, over 200 arrests (call it 250) and 1 death. That's a 0.0125% arrest rate. A lot less than a football event. This year's seemed to be very culturally diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly, something most caribbean countries are not. That being said, it's overcrowded and unsafe, there's still violence and the massive clean up job and disturbance to the local residents. I was astounded that the entry points to carnival had UNMANNED metal detectors, what' the point? There were many other entry points that were not manned or had no metal detectors. I'd love a safe space to celebrate my culture, so why can't Notting Hill be a 3-day festival? Move it to a very large park, charge a reasonable fee, alcohol and drugs can be controlled in-house and there would (potentially) be less need for a Police presence, which could be funded by the festival itself, more concentrated noise, a bit of money generated. Otherwise, get rid of it. I don't think I'll be back.

I've always loved the sound of carnival and heard great things but as a young man from Lewisham, I was always distinctly aware of the intentions of some attending which again sadly has put me off going myself. As a man who vows off wearing green as I already look 'Irish' enough as it is my conspicuous appearance would also be of concern to me!

I live in Brighton and the annual Pride event down here sounds very similar (except the violence). It has now been largely ticketed and is held in Preston Park, on the outskirts of Brighton (I've not attended this either). It doesn't stop the town being trashed each year though, which I find puzzling as it appears to be a very similar crowd to those who are at the forefront when it comes to environmental issues (a lot of people who attend are not gay). I'm all for people having the right to celebrate whatever they like, but with those rights come responsibilities which, sadly, seem to go missing when it comes to very publicly enjoying themselves.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |
