Do any of the older posters remember these.... made for radio commentary, you got the name of the player and into which numbered section he had run or passed the ball.....

Claimed to be the origin of the phrase "back to square one". No idea if it's true.

Yep, that's right. He was brilliant then and as YT said he had a soft spot for Palace. Still does I fancy.

Unfortunately he's much more restrained these days on the telly. But still one of the best commentators who doesn't need support from an 'expert'.

Pearce is a Bristol City fan, but I'm sure I recall him saying that many of his close family - possibly it's his wife and her family - are Palace. Unfortunately I can't quite remember.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

What I see the op getting at is the telly being more like sitting in the Arthur Wait. Blink and you miss it.

Asking everybody around you "what just happened there" .

I recall sitting in the occluded cheap seats in the upper holmesdale. We all couldn't see the red card. Couldn't understand how the other team seemed to be all over us for 85 minutes.

Sometimes you need a commentator to help with the bleeding obvious.

Yes I believe his wife is Palace.

In principle I don't have a problem with the concept of commentators. However, these days a lot of them don't know when to shut up. Also, the co-commentator was once there only as an expert summariser and would chip in when invited - now they engage in on-going conversation with the lead commentator so that there is never ending babble.

I don't think it actually is as square one would be attacking for one team, yet defending for the other. More likely some kind of hop scotch or board game/ snakes and ladders kind of thing.
You will find it referenced as commentary in some places - yet it wasn't referenced even as square one: a separate announcer merely called the number out as the play moved around the pitch. It's quite surreal to hear but does make sense when you see the pitch diagram.
So that's the kind of thing the internet is wrong about.

I always turn the TV sound off if i am watching at Home, when you are a match you dont have some bias idiot giving you a running commentary (Hopefully)

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

That's not strictly speaking true as whilst I can recognize a Palace player I don't always know the individual players on the opposition and I prefer the commentary in the old days when all they did was tell you the name of the person on the ball

There are some ex players who can provide back scene insights and also helpful comments on tactics. But most of them are dim, inarticulate, top 6 biased, and their "humour" is catastrophically poor.
