I guess its Ward, Andersson and Guehi in a 3 at the back with Clyne and Mitchell at wing backs. Midfield 4 of Doucoure, Schlupp, Eze and Ayew with Wilf up top? I just cant see Clyne or Mitchell getting forward much. Hopefully, it will help us keep it tight at the back and we can capitalise on the occasional breakaway. I would have liked Mateta for his hold up ability and to occupy their centre backs. Pretty much no-one expects to get anything tonight. So, maybe it's worth trying something they may not have expected? When I first saw the line up - I was WTH..!! But the more I think about it - I’m more with “why not” - it’s a free hit none of us expect anything from this game - so try something different - you never know unless you try..!!! COYP

Listening to PV speak I can see what he is trying to do. Poor line up still Hughes should be starting for Jeff and Wilf is not a striker he's useless in that role. Originally posted by palace chick

It might be that PV will be looking to take advantage of the 40 mile gap that Trent always leaves behind him by freeing up Mitchell to roam forward more. I saw this as a 3-5-2 with Ayew and Zaha up top, but as we played 4-4-2 all pre-season I am only guessing. This is not Liverpool's strongest line-up so we perhaps have slightly more chance, but like others have said it is hard to tell whether this tactical move is genius or madness. One thing I would say is that I think our bench might actually be stronger than theirs.

Ayew on his own up front! Just the ticket, that is. How many years of evolution does it take to end up with that? 4-5-1 just invites the opposition on to you. Both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold will spend the evening in the Palace half. Not too much belief we can win this one, then. Just damage limitation. Looking forward to being proven wrong.

We are away to Liverpool and he thinks we need 5 at the back to squeeze the front 3. Ayew and Zaha better at the press In defence as well than eddy and Mateta. Why not try it, we know he has been working on it. We can always revert back to 433 if needed.

Liverpool are desperate to win and if we try to play football against them as per usual PV, they'll get what they want. This probably is an occasion for royball and hoping to frustrate them long enough that they'll over-commit and offer us a chance on the counter or tire themselves out and give eager quick tricksy attackers a chance towards the death. Put like that, 4-4-2 would mean Luka and Ward may well be a better choice - much as it pains me to say it more out of sorrow for Luka than antagonism to Ward.

PV announced in his press conference that we were going to defend for 90mins, so although the line-up is "different", it's nevertheless "understandable". Who knows? Maybe Liverpool will be flummoxed.

Looks like a formation to keep the score down . Let’s hope so. I see 2-0 as a good outcome for us. 3-0 just acceptable.

As I mentioned in the other thread, Vieira doesn't know his best 11 or formation, that much is clear now with this starting line up. Just flinging mud and seeing how much will stick.

I remember when we experimented with Eddie McGoldrick as a sweeper at Anfield. I hope this one turns out better
