Johnstone must have done something right to have made the Euro squad only 12 months ago. As has been said, he will want minutes on the pitch so as to fight for a WC spot. Once fully fit again, I expect him to be given a chance.

I think this is a good example of thought out succession planning.

It's been reported that VG wants to end his career in Spain and so this season could well be his last for Palace.

Just my opinion, I don't think Butland has done enough to suggest he's a good enough replacement.

So I think Johnstone has been identified as someone that can challenge for VG's place and also succeed him in time.

Why did we buy him?

If he is no better than VG?

I’m sure he would’ve left West Brom to play games to get into the WC squad, as he was in the squad at the Euros.

If he is not going to be no1 pretty soon I don’t get the move as I’m sure for most players it’s about minutes on the pitch before November!

I think the word FREE might hold a clue.

It looks like Guaita’s last season with us and Johnstone has been brought in to fight for the No 1 slot with Butland. One may go out on loan but I’m impressed that we have these 3 top keepers. I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Butland, especially the end of season games he got. These days the keeper plays the ball out from the back and Butland seems to be improving on that. Haven’t seen Johnstone yet, so will have to wait on that. Guaita seems to be the best I’ve seen at doing this out of him and Butland so far as well as being a great shot stopper. Be interesting to see who gets to be our No 1 by the end of the season?

Yes a good addition, but a bit fed up he's injured already. Must have happened when he modelling for the new kit. Going sick on your first week at a new job usually doesn't go down well!
I share the sympathy for Butland. By and large he's covered well but perhaps not totally dispelled the 'rick in him' theory.
Guaita to start the season.

Ok - let me put it another way. I don’t understand him coming here when he could’ve gone Forest been a starter from game 1 and got minutes on the pitch prior to the WC.

100% agree. VG is currently No 1 but at 35 and with 1 year left of his contract the chances are he won't be here in 12 months.
Johnstone can challenge now and step up next season. PV clearly thinks he's at least as good or better than Butland, who i think also has only 1 year left of his contract.
We need to make sure we don't run out of keepers in 12 months - a forward thinking decision.

At Premier League level there is no such thing as a free transfer.
His wages and signing on fee will reflect that no transfer fee is being paid.

I suspect we offered a larger salary package and/or a longer term contract, plus maybe less of a relegation clause than Forest.
Plus maybe now we are established in the Prem we are seen as a better option for players - although i suspect the money was the main motivator.

Part of the goalkeeping conundrum has been solved, Remi Mathews has joined St Johnstone on a season long loan. That leaves VG, Buckland & newbie SJ as our 3 senior 'keepers. Tho, with 2 of them injured atm, looks like either young Whitworth or Goodman will be our reserve 'goalie' at the start of the season.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Guaita is a proven lower prem keeper. Johnstone is not. Guaita is the incumbent but he's a reflex keeper who's getting older.

Therefore Johnstone has an opportunity, but no more, to try to displace him. But from what I've read, Johnstone won't be the answer unless he's been badly coached and is willing to work very hard to correct his flaws.

Well he won both player of the year awards at West Brom a couple of seasons ago when they went down so obviously didn't do too badly in the Premier League. Will be interesting to see what he can do with a better defense in front of him.

With Matthews going on loan today, Butland injured and Johnstone possibly still injured then Guaita will start the season as No 1 , it would be madness to play him in the pre season game Saturday, if he gets injured, we will have the pick of two academy keepers for Arsenal.

Guaita has just signed a new 1 year deal, taking him to July 2024.

With Butland's contract up in the summer, that has to be the nail in Butland leaving the club.

Johnstone v Guaita to continue fighting it out? Must say, I'd be a little gutted at not having got any game time recently if I were Johnstone. Probably the ropiest period Guaita has had in his time at the club.
