Sounds like the worst swap deal in footballing history to me. You make it sound like we have a choice. We don't. Wilf's contract is running out. The decisions are his to make at this point, not ours. We can keep him for one more year and lose him for nothing or we can let him go now for the best deal we can get. Presently, that appears to be around £20 million and Felix. You might not like that offer but it's the market price.

I assume Man Utd would still get the agreed proportion of the total sell-on price, rather than the net amount Palace received after a player exchange, so Palace might have to dip into their piggy-bank to make up any shortfall? That is what I assume, too. Otherwise Man Utd's lawyers will have been responsible for the worst sell-on clause in history!

I know very little about this & for sure haven't done any homework on it, but would I be right in saying that if this Felix was an out and out striker presumably he would be trying to get ahead of Tammy Abraham in the Roma team & TA has just had a very successful season for Roma which maybe throws some light on why a move might be interesting for all concerned. He's a pure attacker, fast and skilful, can take a man on and beat him, different from Benteke, Mateta and Edouard. If we're interested in him, I'd guess it's because he'd give us a different option up front. Very highly rated coming through (which I'm well aware means little; great youngsters often fall at the last hurdle) but not entirely surprisingly he fell away a bit after a fast start when he originally broke into the Roma team. He's the sort of player we wouldn't have been able to sign in a million years if he'd kept up his breakthrough pace but it appears now we can. Mourinho's let plenty of young players go before who've gone on to make their mark (Salah, DeBruyne anyone?) He's also Ghanaian so I'd guess Ayew would put a protective arm around him and be able to nurture him into the PL. If Zaha has decided to go (remember, it's his decision, not ours) I'm not averse to Felix as part of the deal. At least it reduces the cash that Man Utd. get a percentage of. Felix is probably not a sure thing but he has a very high ceiling given his age and history and if he does fulfil his potential, we'd be laughing. And I trust Vieira and his team to know how to develop a player.

Felix would be a gamble for us (will he fulfil his promise?) but it's a gamble with a very high upside (because he has a lot of promise). As for in any way comparing his value with Wilf's, that's utterly pointless. People need to understand that Wilf's in the driver's seat now and with his contract finishing, we have very little (if any) control over what we can get for him. The market alone will set the price. Either we sell him now on the basis that any return is better than nothing, or we keep him for one more year and let him go for nothing at all. In my view, £15 million + Felix wouldn't be a bad return for a player who's almost out of contract although I can also see the argument that keeping Wilf for one more year and hoping he fires us into Europe would be worth the price of letting him go on a free next summer.

Agree that all of that is the most likely state of affairs.. Just wonder if we do improve into a Europe entry, will that convince Wilf no free transfer, and keep progressing with Palace? There must be a gamble of sorts going on , is that it.?

I always feel bad for hoping the teams our players play for in the AFCON either don't qualify or get knocked out early.

I thought this a non story, but with Timo Werner now going back to RB Leipzig, then Chelsea are down an attacker and I can see why this is now a story. We can't afford for Zaha to throw another tantrum if he doesn't get his move. Obviously Palace are going to try and push for Gallagher to be part of the deal, if this does happen.

We could get around that by a season long loan with an option to buy when his contract runs out .
