'Diversity' in advertising

I did however want to address this topic just as a mid-morning rant given it is something that has unsettled me for some time and I stumbled across this:


The people modelling Saints' new kit:

1. Young(er) girl
2. Old White bloke
3. A homeless halfwit
4. A middle aged women (I'm guessing) of Asian descent
5. A young Black fella

Does anyone actually look at this and think 'Ah, isn't that all lovely, we are all welcome and included and those people look like me therefore any doubts I had about attending football matches or supporting a team have been removed'...

Or...

Are people more inclined to interpret it in a way I do - "Well they've ticked as many boxes as they thought they'd get away with there, there was probably a lack of crackheads, middle aged Asian women, young black guys and young women buying ludicrously priced replica kits and they're trying to target those markets, or maybe just not have depressed, over/underweight, unemployable, bullied at school types attacking them on social media".

I just don't see the logic in it whatsoever, from both marketer and target audience, perhaps I am just losing it a bit as I get on but for me it devalues valid causes, feels extremely patronising, is painfully obviously profit driven and projects a false image of reality. How long before the Heroin addicts, Dogging enthusiasts, Pagans, Ambidextrous, Double-jointed, Bhutanese, Gluten Intolerant and Restless Leg communities are catered to or start rioting and causing mayhem as they are 'not represented' or 'not visible' in society, will they take to twitter to berate the world, start riots and protests etc? 'Tis Rhubarb I tells ya!!

This every time. Worst thing about social media and modern day is these types get all this attention.

I know.

I'm very soon turned off social media by the fact I fall into neither the category of those I listed, someone having a huge chip on their shoulder or some sort of racist, woman hating zealot who hides very badly behind pseudoscience or carefully crafted words so as not to expose themselves to legal or otherwise consequences.

I used to genuinely feel ashamed when being told off (mostly by my wife, colleagues, my wife, friends, my wife, family members or most prominently by my wife) for striking up conservations or sharing jokes with just about anyone I encounter, in any situation, regardless of who they are but sadly I think I am more uncommon than I thought and hence why such advertising is employed.

I think most business these days realise what a captive audience the online world can be and if they can exploit the echo chamber, group think narrative to their gain/profit they will, only worsening the situation.

I genuinely believe it further winds up those whom they would identify they are 'battling' against and misleads, or worse exploits, those it claims to be on the side of. I often feel dragged violently towards misanthropy by media in all formats these days but thank the Lord for a return to 'the real world', with 'real people' post lockdowns as the remedy is only ever a supermarket trip away! This forum can be bewildering sometimes however I must admit the majority narrative/content does restore some faith for me.

Having said that, for all my good will and intentions, I will always favour any person who gives even the slightest inkling they are a Palace fan, even one poster frequent on N&P who as of yet has given no indication

 


Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Maybe because it’s a bit seedy and preying on communities that are in extreme poverty with prostitution or selling the girls off as one of very few ways of getting by. There are some who leave their children behind with grandparents to work as prostitutes or marry the frustrated middle aged British bloke. Sure the girls are willing, but only because it’s that or extreme poverty or slavery/maybe working in a factory just about feeding yourself. Hardly something the sole brigade want to promote.

But does it actually help sell things? Genuine question? I know there is the adage, 'Go Woke, Go Broke', but do advertising campaigns with these kinds of box-ticking requirements actually get a widget flying off the metaphorical shelves?

I'm also in the ad industry, and its genuinely insane.

There was a drive, and rightly so, to make advertising ‘as a whole’ more inclusive and representative. Basically, not only white people in every ad.

Unfortunately, the cancel culture has got each individual brand so s*** scared that they strive to be as ‘inclusive’ as possible in every piece of communication.

Once you have sold a script to a client the casting ask is now ALWAYS for a mixed-race family. And if there is a little girl the bullseye is a mixed-race girl with big hair. So we are now not always casting for who does the best job, but instead who wont get us cancelled.

Real example: Last Christmas I made an ad where the lead was an 8yo ice skater. The priority was that she was a s*** hot skater, not an actress who could learn to skate. We found the perfect talent, but the request from the client was always, ‘can’t we find a mixed-race girl’. We tried but couldn’t. To make her as comfortable as possible (and as we were shooting a short family scene) we also brought in her little sister and mum – so we could guarantee on screen chemistry.

The diversity team got involved and were threatening to pull the add if we couldn’t find a way to make it more diverse. In the end, and this is mad, we cast a 2nd woman of Asian decent to sit in the background of one shot, as a lesbian partner to the mum…

The best part was when the diversity team asked if this lesbian Asian mum actually was a lesbian….. I took much glee in telling them that you cannot ask peoples sexual preferences when casting.

Honest answer. Broadly I'd guess not, but we don't have any data to suggest either way. Only some anecdotal comments on twitter. I've never seen race identified in selling data.

Where it will work to a point is in brands that are trying to shift or appeal to a broader or new audience group. Take North Face as an example, established premium outdoor brand, who's DNA is about exploration.

It hasn't moved away from its heritage or core audience, but has done a lot to make its brand appeal to the youth, that now wear NF around cities. This doesn't mean that they haven't used white people, but they haven't used 40yo white people. They have used a complete mix of urban rudeboys

Thanks a million for your response. Really insightful. Almost become fun, in a bizarre way, to study the adverts by way of seeing just how far they are willing to stretch this nonsense.

Now I wish I could link to it, and am beginning to wonder if it was in fact a product of almost wishful thinking on my part but I am sure I once saw an Argos Xmas ad that had the standard black family with a white, dwarf, girlfriend.

Made me grin from ear to ear.

Th example you gave is perfectly reasonable an outdoor branch trying to move into the fashion market. However things like soap powder / washing up liquid I just don't see it applies here.
