Guehi has a calm and commanding demeanour, on the pitch and in interview. He seems a natural choice as captain.

As others have said, most successful teams have half a dozen 'captains', and our best teams were no exception. Some of the interviews with the 1990 side are revealing in that respect. Wright, Bright, Thomas and Gray were very different characters, but they wanted the same thing very, very much, and wouldn't let a single teammate (including each other) off the hook if they were not producing. If that meant a changing room row, or even a fight, so be it.

I remember one game at Selhurst in the early 1990s, when Lee Sinnott (bless him) had been beaten by the opposition winger for the second time. Unfortunately for Sinnott, a three second lull in the noise from the stands coincided with the receipt of some 'constructive feedback' from Eric Young, who bellowed 'HOW MANY MORE f***ING TIMES SINNOTT?!!!' so loud that it echoed inside the main stand roof! 'Sinnott' not even 'Lee'. Poor sod.

I shudder to think what Wright would have said (and possibly done) to Benteke at times if they'd played together, or what Thorn and Young would've made of Van Aanholt pulling out of challenges, or what Thomas would've felt about Yohan '70 minutes at a push' Cabeye, especially given the wages the modern lot were taking home.

That's the main thing for me - leaders hold themselves to very high standards, and then forcibly hold others to them too. It's not always pleasant to experience, and it must be managed carefully, but it is potentially the most valuable asset a team has.

Based on the impression we get from watching him play (as opposed to knowing him personally) Guehi could be a pretty good choice for captain, but for me, he needs to get better at the day job first. He is very young for his position, seems to have a good attitude to his trade and the club, and is an asset. At the same time, he has just completed his first season of top-flight football and has been found wanting on a number of occasions, especially when facing crosses into his zone. How can he hold others to high standards when he has yet to attain them himself?
